Boys and girls: I am interested in purchasing a later model (single side cover) IRS transaxle to go with Bridget's Soob job. She's sporting a 1969 model now; my trans builder says the later cases are a better platform on which to build a box that can take the Suby torque.

He advises me that the codes to look for are AL (IRS only), AR, AU, AK, AO, AS and AT. Please correct me if that's misinformation.

If anyone on the East coast has something like this on a shelf in the garage--just a rebuildable unit is all I'm looking for--please dialogue me with your terms.

Ed - All those trans codes have 3.875 R&P some with the rare LSD like from a 181 Thing. You can build WB's up to what you need - get with Shu (Dale) he has a rebuilder contact.

p.s. you'll need a front spoiler and rear air dam to keep Bridget right side up with Subbie hp.

Hello Ed -

I build tranny's and I'm located on East Coast. I have a single side cover /late tranny that is apart at present. It is a 3:88 R&P - has the late super beetle mainshaft (HD) and can either have a super diff (4 spyder gears) / with HD side cover or stock unit installed when put back together, if you are interested.

If you want just a tranny core - there are several on Samba for $75.00 -- up.

Let me know if I can be of help.

John

How about installing a Subaru WRX trans and never have a problem again. I have a kit that allows a Modified wrx 5 speed trans (that I offer to) to go right into a VW pan. Here are a couple of pictures. The whole kit including rebuilt and modified trans is $5300 shipped. We've done a few and once you go 5 speed you never go back.... Plus they are made for the Subi power.....

Jim, Thank you very much....... Have you seen the new brake kits I just came out with?

David,

I can put together a kit Subaru trans kit and a Subaru motor kit with ECU. The cooling system would be close, however with all the different body types (yes not all fiberglass bodies are the same underneath) there would be some final tweaks for the end user to make.

Our Current Subaru trans kit with fully modified and rebuilt 2002 and newer WRX five speed turbo geared trans, with everything need to install it retails for $5200

By the way water cooled engines like to run around 2200 rpms while air cooled trans axles can not be geared properly to do this, and will cause cooling issues. Another good reason to have the correct trans.
