I've noticed that my VS has developed a leak from the transaxle (it's a swingaxle model) on the right side. It seems to come down from the joint between the side plate and the case itself. My car has approximately 400 miles on the odometer; I'm planning to change the gear oil when it reaches 600 (as recommended by the VW shop manual for rebuilt units). Could it just be that the side plate is loose? I know for a fact that all air cooled VW's eventually leak but is it normal for a tranny that has only 400 miles on it since a rebuild? If not, what could it be and how could I fix the problem? Thanks to all!

Not very common to develop a leak at the side plate and the tranny. It is a little more common to develop a leak at the rubber boot next to the side plate. I would hope for the rubber boot, an easier fix. In each case you should be able to repair the problem provided it is "seal" related while the unit is still in the car.
I'd have to check into it in more detail to find out exactly where the leak comes from. It could be from the right boot and dripping down the right cover plate for all I know. Also, I've read here that synthetics are the way to go when I change my gear oil. What's the best brand? Also, I'm not sure if the rebuilt units put into Vintage Speedsters already have synthetic gear oil in them. If switching from regular to synthetic, is there a problem in draining the gear oil and just putting in the synthetic without getting rid of the conventional gear oil residue inside?
