You can most anything if you're smart and determined, the only question is, should you? I'm not familiar w/the air cooled automatic vw transaxle, but there are several people on this site running subie engines with subie front wheel drive transaxles. Those are available as autos, and should work.

The longitudinally mounted audi/vw transaxles (think water cooled - passat etc) can likely also be adapted.

Don't fall off your chair on this next one, but a chevrole corvair transaxle might even work with ring/pinion swapped. It's basically a 2 speed power glide. It would really be a most unsporting choice with the type 1 and type IV engines mostly used here however... In fact, it might cause overheating because the rpm turned at speed. Something to check when you choose your transaxle.
