Not wanting to spend $200 on a trunk carpet kit, I decided to experiment with JC Whitney's universal trunk carpeting. It's $20 for a piece 54"x108" and easy to apply with a little contact cement. They also sell a flexible plastic edge trim, which I'm still playing around with but I think it will work.
If you're looking for a cheap solution, this is certainly adequate for a trunk.
