Thought I'd retell a story I just heard. A good friend of mine was interested in a Porsche 904 kit by Avanti Motor Cars (or somthing close). He called the builder and was told they will cost about 40,000 for a rolling chassis, everything except the engine and trans, and he should see it in about six to nine months. So he put his 5,000 down and started getting the engine built (he's a porsche engine builder), trans. etc. After a year he was informed the price had gone up to 60,000, and he would have to wait another six months to a year.
After getting his money back, he is now looking for another company to buy a kit from that he can use the parts he has accumulated.
He told me nothing he was told about the car or the deal turned out to be true, and everything was alot of smoke and mirrors.
It's stories like these that make me glad I chose to do business with Kirk Duncan at Vintage Speedsters.
P.S. And no, I didn't get paid to say that. Eddie

A great story Eddie.

Seems to me this is one of the very valuable services the SpeedsterOwners site provides. We gather here (electronically) and can communicate our experiences with builders so the "cream" rises to the top.

There have been some fly by night operations in the past but I think it's getting more difficult for the smoke and mirrors guys and the bait and switch guys, and the buy on time guys to pull their shenanigans.

In large part it's because of this site, and the network of active owners, they can't pull it off as easily.
