Hello

I have just joined SpeedsterOwners after having just purchased a used Speedster about a month ago. I was talking with a gentleman at Becks who suggested I join this site as he felt that somone could help me determine the manufacturer of my car as I also want to purchase side curtain windows and a convertible top for it.

He mentioned that certain tell-tale signs such as the dash and gauges as well as even door hinges would divulge the makers name.

If any one can help me, I will post some pictures. And if you could tell me what kind of detail shots would help, I will get them posted.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

Cheers,
Craig

There's a makers tab at the top of the page that might be of some assistance, or you could cruise through individual files -- just play with the site a bit and you'll see what I mean -- or we could look at photos.
You'll have an answer before you know it. Maybe a few answers.
Congratulations on the purchase!
There are a lot of Fiberfab/Classic Motor Carriage (CMC) speedsters from the 80's-mid 90's out there. One distintive feature is the cast aluminum 1 piece engine grill - called the "hibachi grill" by many. Do not believe any other maker used such a grill. True they had their own Vintage gauges (but they also sold VDO ones), their Speedster bucket seats are unique too, plus the rubber dash eyebrows. Post pictures and we'll tell you maker. They did come with an id plate too that was builder installed plus the hood handle had their crest vice the OEM Porsche one. Check out the build manuals in the Library as it might shed light on maker.

Thank you Cory and Wolfgang for your posts. I appreciate your help.

I have uploaded some general pictures to my folder.

The gauges are VDO, there is a 1" square tube under the dash and the engine grille has 12 very pliable aluminum louvers or slats held in place by 3 cross members and attached to the outer frame by a total of 4 bolts; 2 on each side.

Another thing I have noticed when looking at the many photos online is that mine does not have a firewall behind the engine. I don't know if the guy who built it just didn't put one in or if the kit didn't include one.

Thanks again for any help you can offer. Please let me know if you would like to see any more detailed photos.

Cheers,
Craig
Craig, welcome and your tub looks sweet...some of the markings or badges are a little diff than most, but that's cool.. It's your tub and you can do whatever you want.. and that is awesome.. I am not a builder by any means, but your build looks very unique here... I do know that your rear body should have an engine badge as well as your "Porsche" logo.. example... "1600"... but that is only if you wanna look orginial Bro.. it's your call and we all respect your call here..

Good luck, and good runnings..

I was finally able to speak with the guy who built my car back in 1994, today. He informs me that it is a custom tube frame. The only donor item was the VW 1600 cc engine and possibly the gas tank. My car is registered as a 1972 Super Beetle which is great for insurance and because it doesn't have to adhere to the tough smog laws of today.

The car originally had drum brakes only. He also lowered the ride height. The second owner must have changed the fronts to disc as well as adding the second carb.

Apparently the kit was purchased from a company in Barrie, Ontario, Canada that has since closed up. He thinks that they may have created molds off of another manufacturers kit; possibly Intermeccanica.

Does anyone know anything about this company?

Cheers,
Craig

I will look into the engine badge. Thanks for the heads up.
