I am probably mad. I have pulled the motor to make some changes. I have been given a EJ20 closed deck block, complete with forged rods and forged pistons. This will allow me to increase the boost up to 1.5 bar and up to 8000rpm without any problems. Why? Who the hell knows, maybe it

300 HP, 7 days. Mad? I think not.

I'm nearing the end of a 13 month odyssey with my 200 hp (legitimate, dyno verified, "Orange County Correction Factor") 2332. That kind of power (300 hp) is unthinkable in a Type 1- it can be done, but at a cost of probably 10x what you've got in your mill.

I think your big problem is going to be putting that power to the ground- unless you are running a tube frame, or have heavily modified your pan. Put up some pictures of your set-up once you get it done.
I'm on the north side of 230HP at the crank based on increased boost to 1 bar and having dynoed at 163HP at the wheels with 0.6 bar so I figure about 200WHP now. On my AM drive I really got on it from a stop light and put down good traction with the 8" Bridgestones. I think with suitable tires (tyres?) and suspension, Greg will be just fine at 300WHP. I have my car limiting at 7200RPM right now.

Tomm-

I believe you are proving my point. You have Henry's full tubular frame in your car, and if I'm not mistaken, a 911 suspension. Your car would easily handle the 300 hp, but it isn't a pan-based speedster.

Putting even half that much power to the ground in a pan car requires getting serious about Kafer braces, sold mid-mounts, straps, etc.
Stan,

My turbo IM has 944 rear w/ added sway bar and 911 front (with sway bar too) hooked up to the stiffened IM tube frame actually. I agree Greg (or anyone looking at high HP & high torque) needs to pay attention to frame stiffness. If Greg wants high HP and not so high low end torque, he can get away with less stiffness I presume.

"HP is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you move it."

Greg - Although it hasn't been 7 days since your post (your projected completion time), hows the mods going w/ your engine? I would be interested in seeing pics? I take it you set up the subie engine as rear vs. the SAS mid-engine layout I'm running?? Its amazing the power you can get out of these engines.... I'm interested to see how your intercooler / radiator set up is working. I decided to lose the cats (so far I've been able to pull this off in michigan) to reduce heat in the engine bay (was too close to my intercooler resulting in heat soak. Looking forward to your results. Are you Carlisle bound this year? Rob
Well the motor is back together, it is however still lying on the workshop floor. I am off to buy some new bolts to mount the adapter to the block, for some reason there different. I have also decided to use new bolts to mount the pressure plate to the flywheel.

There are still some things that i want to tidy up a bit before the motor goes back in, some of the cover plates on the intake manifold and throtle body etc are getting new laser cut bits.

I think i mentioned the header tanks previously, well these are going to be late but i will put it all together and then add them next week.

The carbon fibre panels still need a little more finishing and then i will need to come up with a plan to mount it to the firewall and then be able to mount the coil pack and header tanks etc.

Has been a lot of fun so far. I really prefer wrenching when its not broken!

I should have an update within a couple of days. I am still optimistic that i wil drive it again on Saturday!
I got the car going on Friday afternoon. Everything sounded pretty good. Once the car got warm it started pushing out a fair bit of smoke from the breather, When the motor starts making boost it creates its own smoke screen. Bummer..... One thought was that maybe too much oil was put in, I'm not so sure, my sixpence worth tells me that it is blowing past the pistons either a broken ring or ring groove.

I will do a compression test prior to pulling the motor again.

Moral of the story, if it aint broke don't fix it......

Bill, there are certain times when you don't discuss cricket with a south african. THIS IS ONE OF THEM!

What can i say? Aus. has out played us! six love!

COngratulations on Hughes, what a find, replacing a world class player with a rookie record breaker. He has certainly given us a cricket lesson!

Too bad about the home series loss though!

Cory, Yes I am in South Africa. Quite different from where you are though.
Greg your guys gave us a few lessons on our soil, they seem able to come back from a certain loss and turn it into a victory.
I havent been able to do much work on my speedster for a while, the wife talked me into buying another house and we have been renovating it... lm physically buggered... anyway I'm off to the US this Friday to finally get my bikes underway, and l'll be damed if i didnt sell the first one today check em out

The auto failed in my Thunderbird.... so another job when l get back.. then its full steam ahead on getting the speedster on the road

This week end I went and played a bit. Our local track had a track day. I did about 3 sessions of about 8 laps per session. Each session was a little quicker than the last. what a blast, i still cant get over how quick my car accelerates. I keep up very comfortably with the Porsche 911 SC's. They try very hard through the corners and brake very hard. what I loose under braking and scratching through the corners i make up big time on the straights.

When I stopped in the pits after each session I was swamped by interested spectators and drivers. I must say the response to the car was nothing short of amazing.

When i was done on the track I had a couple of runs on the skid pan. this was the first time on the skid pan with the speedster and it wont be the last. I have spent quite a lot of time on the skid pan in the past. I can really recomend it as you can learn to control the car in a slid whether induced by power or speed in safe environment. I did encounter a bit of moisture induced missfire which cleared itself a couple of minutes after the run. I will look at sealing up the electrical connections with a bit of clear silicone
