It's really simple to wire the directionals into the light bucket, 12 volt bulb and a crimp connector and you're pretty much mostly there. I did it on my Karmann Ghia.

But those 356 horn grills/directional lights are SO elegant, SO cleanly designed and the way that the center of the lens lines up perfectly with the screw holding the headlamp in position . . . too beautiful to eliminate . . .

Unless you're going to follow through with additional
"outlaw" body mods, you don't wanna mess with perfection.

I put LED's in the headlight buckets of my last bug. Found a small set (1"x 2.5"). How I did it:
1) Cut slot a little smaller than the led board where the old light holes are.
2) trim it with door edge gaurd.
3) Fashion a wire holder simular to the one that held the original socket, cover it with heat shrink.

4) lock the LED boards in place with the holder.

5) reroute the blinker wires.

Looked way cool and was actually bight enoug to see even with the headlights on.
I guess that I should have been more specific with my question. I know that I can use the single element bulb and rewire it to the turn signal rather than the marker light. However, I wanted to use a dual element bulb, which will require modification to the existing bulb mounting/electrical connection to add a third contact point. I would rather buy something that will fit the purpose and dedicate the time that I would have spend fabricating a bulb mount/connector to driving the car ;-]

Unfortunatly no. I should have taken some but...

I bought the LED's at a local speed shop. They have the running and blinker built in. Best of all they are clear when off and are not noticeable at all. They are also much lower in profile so when you look at the car from the front you do not see them. They light up yellow. Awsome with just the running light on.

I'm in South Carolina and my Standard Automotive and Motormite catalogs are back up in Rhode Island (Doh!) or I could give you a part number.

Try going to a local, non-chain auto parts store (or a NAPA) and ask them if they have either of those catalogs to either take home or browse while at the store. In both, they should have a rivet-in socket to convert from single lead to dual lead that should fit the hole diameter that you have.

The NAPA store will probably have a Belden catalog (usually just wire and cables) but if you tell them what you're looking for and they're halfway knowlegeable they should have a NAPA catalog or derivative that will do.
