I am finishing the wiring on my VS Speedster turn signals and have not been able to make the turn signal indicator light work correctly. I am using the (I think) newer style flasher with three tabs. I have the 31 tab wired to ground, the 49 tab wired to a keyed power source off the fuse bar and I have wired both the turn signal switch wire (black/green/white) and the turn signal indicator light from tab 49a. The other side of the turn signal light is grounded. This is where the problem seems to come in. The indicator light is serving as a permanent circuit for the flasher, and it flashes all the time. I am trying to follow a Beetle wiring diagram, but I am obviously wiring in the indicator light wrong. Anyone with a better idea? Thanks in advance.

A heavy duty 3 connector flasher can be used if it is connected to the power coming in on it's + lead and the output lead heads out to the turn switch.
Depending on the dash indicator light being (+) or (-) circut will determine if you connect it to the third connector on the flasher or the flasher output lead with a Vw 2 into 1 connector..

A simple test to check polarty on the dash lite is to ground it's wire with the key on . if it lights up it's a (+) circut, or with the key on and the turn switch off. touch the lite lead to which ever contact that does not lite it up.
Barry, I tried your recommendation by attaching the indicator light to the 31 tab and the other side to ground. I get a real weak indicator, implying to me that there is not enough power left in that circuit after the flasher solenoid. I am sorry, I do not understand your comment on polarity, since I can wire the indicator light either way. What I really need to figure out is where can I get common power off the flashing power to the signal light circuits without combining the right and left circuits. Thanks for your comments. Any other recommendations?
Are you using a Vw flasher or a HD aftermarket one?
If VW please tell me which year. I think I can help you eather way .
What happened when you touched the indecator wire from the dash bulb to a ground with the key on? Im gona pull both vw books and my digial electronic/s book and stand by for a while and my VS wiring guide.

The first thing that pop into my mind is a lose ground the Vw flasher has a ground a brown or brown/white . I need to look in my books to confirm the colors .
sense Most kits use the 66 turn switch
1966 flasher contact(30)12g Red -main power supply
(15)14g Black -power from ignition switch in
VS can be Green
(49)14g Black/Red -power to trn switch
on earlier can be (49a) andd share
output to fourway
(49a)16g White-power to fourway switch
(S)16g ?- return from fourway switch
(31)May or my not be the 16g brown- Ground
Suggest you make sure the flasher is bolted
to a metal ground.
(??)(VL) right turn -Black/Lime on 66 trn sw
(??)(VR) left turn -Black/green on 66 turn sw
(??)(BL) Indecator lite -blue/white
Barry, thanks for the added ideas. I think the problem, as you pointed out, is I am using a newer style flasher, but the 66 trn switch. The flasher I am using has only three pins. Furthermore, I do not have a four-way flasher system wired. I'll look for an older style flasher that incorps. the emergency flasher as well. Any other thoughts are appreciated. JR
