Hello

I am from Germany and I have a Speedster with a 1915ccm Typ 1 which is broken after 1.850 km and only 1 1/2 year old

I think now that a Typ 4 engine where better and much more stable as a Typ 1 which the same PS like 100-140PS

The only problem I have is that the car have a historic number and our TÜV wants a document what say that this kind of engine was also build in bevor 1982 in a speedster replica.

I have found a lot of information about the typ 4 in original porsches 914 or 912 but not for a replica

Can someone help me or have this information for me?

Maybe a magazin or a other offical document?

Thanks

Georg

You'd think that since the last year for the Type 4 engine was 1976 that that would be good enough for them.  See T4.

Jake Raby (MassIVe) may have installed some way back then or Joe Cali (NexGen)????

Jack Crosby has one in his replica but its a more recent build.

Hi Rich

the problem is not that is a replica the problem is that the speedster have a historic number which say that this car is over 30 years old and it is a good of culture and this means also you can drive this cars with the old engine which have no catalysator or something like this everywhere you want ( in some regions it is forbidden if you dont have the right certificate on your window) you must spend only a little tax and the insurance cost are not about the model or PS only how much does the car cost and some other things.

So for the replica doesnt exist some database by the people from the DMV and for legimitation some changes you must bring anything to him which say what you want is historic correct.

I write to henry president of intermeccanica but in the place he see that is not a car from him he told me that he have to much work and can not write me some in a official letter.

This would help because his company builds replicas since 1970 and in my papers it stand only VW Porsche Replica not the company which have build the car!

So maybe someone of you can help me

Thanks

Georg

Hello Troy the problem of the type 1 is the heat of the engine when you drive a long time with higher speed. Here in germany at our highways we can drive so fast that we want or can When i drive to a show or to a nice place or orher land in europe I use this all time because I wants fast there and then I drive slowly around them. For this I drive 140 or 160 km / h constant (more is not so comfortable in the open car) for a long time. And to have a Type 1 engine which have this power and is also stable for this for a long time and much km is not easy because for this you must spend a lot of tuning in it The type 4 have this power in the normal way and you can bring more in a easy way to it. The engine is much more stable as a over tuned type 1 with 140PS or more. So this is way for me the best way was a type 4 but the problem is my historic number and if i found no one hu can give me the information that this type 4 was also biuld in a replica speedster I can only put a type 1 again with the old problems maybe with a better tuning and so with more km stable but not so much as a type 4, 2.0 L with 140 PS Georg

Hi Rich I am not so strong but I have short hair and its not so bad to drive so fast with the speedster - ok its a little bit loud but if you want on the fastest way home or to a other location it is no problem

So 200 or more km is no problem if you don't want to talk to anyone

And this is why I need a stabile engine not only a quarter mile speedy with a high potential type 1 engine

Georg, I tell you what, it's not about being strong (maybe there's a loss in translation thing here). I have only had my Beck up to the 85 mph barrier once or twice and I'm just not diggin' how it hugs the road at about those speeds. Either you've got one well handling VS or a couple of screws loose...and I'm not talking about loose screws on the VS. A quick blast up to 85mph once in awhile is one thing, cruising for hours at that speed is not something I personally would try. Screw the wind and noise, that comes with the territory. That said, a Type 4 is still the way to go if you can swing it by the authorities. Good luck, both on and off the highway!

Georg---you are so right about the Type IV my friend.  Nothing touches it except maybe a Subaru if you don't care about the aircooled authenticity.  My car came with a 1915 and I can't say it ever let me down except I always worried about a break down on a highway in the middle of no where.

From what I read, the popularity of the Type IV started in Europe and much earlier than here in the USA.  You might check with clubs there to see when early adaptors started using Type IV engines in VW bugs and other cars.  Surely you won't be the only person in Europe with a legally registered Type IV in your car!  Get going on some detective work!

If you plan on cruising above 80 for extended periods:

1) Carry some weight in the nose. Tools and spares work well.

2) Get some longer gears. A 3.44:1 Ring and pinion with a .93 4th sets you up at about 3500 RPM at 80. If 80 is your target cruise speed, set up your gearing to keep the engine between 3000 and 3500 RPM.

3) Keep the car lower to the ground than a lot of guys are doing here.

Hello I have found Jim Youngs on facebook I write him I hope he read my notice and answear me

If someone know his email or other contactdata please tell me

For the gearshift ?? I have now a 3:88 with I think a 0.89 4 gear I have also the 3:44 where the best solution for speedtrips on the interstate but what is on the normal road?

Is the way between 3 & 4 gear not to long?

Georg
