I've been waiting patiently for a good type 4 to come available for my speedster, but this guy has offered me a type 3 with 6,000 worth of receipts of machine work carried out and parts etc for a good price. The question is, is a type 3 as good and as a type 4????? Whats the differance anyone please.......

The only difference between a type 3 and a type 1 engine is the cooling system and tin. The type 3 uses a more "pancake" style cooling fan instead of the upright one used on a type 1. The cases are the same, except that a type 3 has the option of rear supports. As to which one is as good as the other. All depends on what your preference is. There is plenty of old discussions concerning the comparison betweent the 2 that I have read here, mostly headed up by the type 4 guru Jake and the type 1 guru George Brown. I'd be curious to see how someone could spend $6K on a type 3 motor.
The guy has placed the advert as follows:2100 type4 lump,1800 914 heads with new valves, guides shot blasted and mashined as req.Mahle barrels and pistons, total seal rings, lightened and shot peened rods, new rod bolts, new small end bearings.new main bearings etc.balanced crank,911 upright fan conversion,009 dizzy with petronics, new bosch new coil,t4 case fully machined for fan oilways and oil filter,911 valvetrain,h/d rocker shafts, fast road cam, electric fuel pump,45 dellortos on matched manifolds.race clutch with allnew parts, blue paited fan housing, all parts fully balanced and lightened, new race spec followers.
During a chat over the phone he tells me its actually a type3, so l asked you all can this ring true???? many thanks for your replys
Maybe he means its from a T2 which would be a VW Transporter or Bus (1972-1979 or he calls the VW 411/412 a Type 2. Check the engine serial number on the case and then go to: www.tunacan.net/t4/reference/case.htm and you'll see its real origins. Not sure about his comment about machined for oil filter since they all came stock with the oil filter. Below is a pcture of a 914 engine minus the cooling tine - give away pieces are the oil filter and the oil filler piece (which might not be same on a 911 cooling tin conversion).

Dido on the T4 , I did a upright conversion home built on a T-4 to look and fit factory like a T-1 It went sower in the first 6 hrs of run
I want it back in the car NO DOUT!! but first I need new correct carbs I had these flow tested at my brothers shop and there is something very wrong . One leaks at the base and the other won,t spray smoothly
That plus 2 bady chewed lobes on the cam say it all and the exhaust is trash

I wish to revert the oil filter back on to the case but need to figure out a way to keep the full flow set up but internaly and make it look factory!!!
That and a redesign of the oil cooler to a factory upright mount without any external hoses are high on my to do list then the intire thing will go to Jakes for his inspection and then if anything is not right I will remake any custom part to his likeing . If he will build it? Any improvement that work are his to copy.

I want to raise the standand to a totaly factory looking engine. It's not far off the mark now. but I see room for improvement
