Ross, I would agree that Jake builds very nice type 4 engines and that type 4 engines have stronger/heavier engine cases and crankshafts with larger journals than stock VW type 1 engines.

But there are engine builders that specialize in type 1 engines that would probably be a better choice if a type 1 is what you want - just as Jake specializes in type 4's.

The old tales about type 4 engines lasting longer in service are largely myths today if you use quality aftermarket parts in a type 1 engine with a full-flow oil filter and service it properly. There are forged, counter-blanced chrome-moly type 1 crankshafts with type 4 main journals, etc., etc.
Just wondering, can a type four engine in a Speedster have heater boxes still? Basically can a person get heat with that setup? BTW.....why go old school type one when you can get a nice BIG type four esspecially with good type four builders out there like Jake. Had to do it all over again with a completly new car I'd go type four! My half cent worth.

I have never tried to install a TIV in stock cooling configuration into a Speedster....It probably would work.

The stock cooling system is complicated, bulky, heavy and inefficient.....Convert to upright and the engine is easier than a TI to work on....

My updated cooling system will be on the market soon, will probably run in the 700.00 range...It will cool a 2.4 Liter, 180BHP engine with 10:1 CR with no issues...will keep the heads at about 300 degrees....

even though I Love the TIV, I don't like the stock cooling system very much at all.
