The car I'm rehabbing has VDO gauges made in Germany...At the outer edge of the multi-gauge face there is a number " 914 841 101 50 "..... I am assuming this set of gauges came from a 914......The combo gauge has fuel level and heat gauges along with sundry idiot lights.....

My question is, if they are 914 gauges, is the " temp " gauge for oil or cylinder head heat????

If cylinder head, I already have the sensor (s).....

Oil. The temperature gauge piece was added as option for 2.0L 914s at the end of 1973. Many you see now came from a 914-6 or a 911 gauge where it was standard equipment. Normal 4 cylinder cars and those with center console gauges had a blinking emergency brake light there the oil temperature gauge is now. The sending unit was in one of the oil sump plates. I keep hearing it referred to as a TACO plate - the left front plate in a 914 - so flipped in your application. The 3.5" plate has an indented portion in middle that lets the sensor be screwed into it on a 45 degree angle. You can also modify a stock plate by tapping or welding proper size thread nut on it - as the taco plate is hard to come by. See picture of taco plates here:

The one on the head was used to signal the fuel injection that the engine was hot or cold so computer could adjust fuel delivery. No use if you don't have the OEM fuel injection.
