And I know of a number of people with brand new cars that died in the first week of ownership. And two that died on the drive home from the dealership! New or old, if it's mechanical it will have problems. The question is, do you want your mechanical monstrosity to look like everyone elses, or do you want to stand out a bit.
As for T1 or T4, both are old and both are stressed. The T1 is stressed more, but is also about half the cost of a T4, and has tons more aftermarket research and testing and suppliers than T4s. The competition between manufacturers of T1 parts makes for better parts for the T1 and for more reliability than ever before. Sorry Jake, but for the cost of one of your engines I can build 2 T1s. My 2332 cost $5k including the hand porting of the heads, the exhaust, and the installation.
Of course now having said all this, my engine will likely grenade on the next drive.

As research on the TIV progresses the prices are dropping. Our main emphesis with the Type IV is for applications that are more demanding of the engine.
Actually most of my 150HP engines run around 6500.00, its not that drastic of a difference till you get in the 2400cc+ range

I think maybe I should have compared Type 3 versus Type 1. I think I will wait a bit longer to make up my mind, but I appreciate all the input.

I think someone should nominate Stan for the site's historian.
You just did! Stan?
