Type 4 Owners Question?

How many type 4 owners have heat in there car? Last night tried to hook up the heat control box on the left side. The axel is in the way. Does any have photos of there setup?

Sorry Jim, I live in San Diego, and while heat would be convenient for defogging the windshield on occassion, I don't have it hooked up either. The air supply tubes became a casuality when a BAS 4-1 merged header got installed.

What heat exchangers and control valves are you using - 412/411/T2 Van/Porsche 914? In 914 the engine was facing the opposite direction i.e. flywheel facing towards rear.

I'm using a stock heater box and heat exchanger. See photos. I miss the days in San Diego when heat was a unused item except on the once and a while cool mornings going to work.

"I'm using a stock heater box and heat exchanger" That looks like a T2 VW Bus heat exchanger! The heat control valve from a 914 has an added J shaped piece that would most likely get it away from the axel. Doesn't the bus exchanger extend too far back to have the exhaust muffler concealed?

I'll try the 914 exchanger, there is a local porsche salvage yard near by.

These are the square port manifolds used on later (' 78 and up) 2L air and water cooled, i.e. BUS NOT 914 . Am I right Wolfgang?
So 914 exch wont fit the exh flanges.

I have these same bus HE on mine. Havent hooked up the heat yet. Like 50# of dead weight in those bricks !!

My suggestion was to just get/use the J shaped piece (removeable from the on-off control valve I pictured) - not entire 914 exchanger. All the controls valves are most likely same diameter. The J will get the control valve away from interfering with the axel - I'm surprised they aren't used on the bus (perhaps they were just misplaced during rebuild/install?).

My theories on the square port design are now out of date... Since that article was posted we have completed 4 rounds of cylinder head development and have been able to attain much better flow margins with the oval port with higher port velocities.

I thought that link was dead, thanks for letting me know it was still there!

Just pickup left and righthand j piece for EASY (East Bay Salvage Yard)yesterday, need to get one end open just a bit larger to make it work at a 45 degree angle. If this doesn't work I will have a custom tube made.
