I've been following this topic on the Newbie forum but figured I'd better start trying to ask my questions in the right place. I located the older thread on the question of FI engines and found it very helpful, but I still have a bunch of questions. My '76 engine is running the stock FI. Is it possible for me to build out the displacement in it and retain the FI on it? I'm assuming that it would need some changes. Are they possible?

Jerry; I think that is definitely a long shot. The FI is set up for the stock engine and so are the heads (they have a little step in them to lower compression and although it can be machined away, things get more complicated). If you chose to keep it stock you could use it in your Speedster though.
Ricardo, thanks for the confirmation. It's pretty much the conclusion I'd come to after reading my eyes blurry on various web forums. I think I'll get a new engine (either long block or turnkey) to the specs I really want in the Speedster. Get it runnng the way I want in the Beetle before I dismantle the body, etc. Then do the Speedster and finally rebuild the FI 1600 as a "back up".
