What a great site! The exchange of information is fantastic. I am about to take the plunge after years of driving 911s. I have loved the 356 forever and now that I have discovered manufacturers like JPS, Beck and Intermechannica I realize these cars are a lot more than a poor relation to the original speedsters.
I any event I am looking at a JPS car in Michigan and I am pretty sure I will go ahead a buy it. It is really nice, in immaculate condition and made by JPS. But I have a few question and maybe someone can help. (Here is where I show how little I know). The car has a 2.0 litre type IV engine that has Porsche stamped on it. I think it must be a 914 engine. It also has a 5 speed trans. A little unusual I think, but I don't know. Can anyone tell me what the likely hp is on this car. Also, I have not sat in the car but i have sat in a Beck. I am 6'3" and my head was way over the top of the windscreen. Are the seats in the JPS lower? And if not, how big a deal is it to lower the seats to the floor so my head is not sticking out? Thanks for all the help whoever.

not sure, i have a 2006 JPS. does not appear to be able lower seats unless you take them off the tracks. on a side not I have been at JPS quite often during the last 5 months and there are guys as tall as you with his car. So I must assume you can fit or it can be modified for you to fit. give John a call he is a great guy.
I've got a Beck and I do believe that the seat is about 1 inch higher than VW-based cars due to the frame and floor design. That said, the top of your head will likely be above the windshield on any of these cars. Regarding John's inclination to work with you, he's been helpful to me and my car is from a competitor. Most of these guys are in this out of love of the cars, not just profit motive. I'm sure he can give you some tips that would work.
TIV/T4 is a VW engine that was used in the VW411/412/Bus and the VW-Porsche 914 (or the fairly rare 1976 912E). None were stamped PORSCHE though (well, maybe the 912E?). Get the engine serial number fron top of the case seam (Begines with GA/GB for 2L) and look it up on the internet. An TIV can be made to be near 2L by changing PC/crank/connecting rods though (2L heads are different - have 3 studs vice 4 holding the intakes). With serial number you can find where it started its life. The original 2L in a 914 with EFI produced ~95 HP (88-100 depending on state/country - CA low and Europe high). Buses had lower compression --- and lead a hard life. Would guess with minor mods would be 100-120 HP. Check out Jake Raby's site on what potential is with the T4 and $$$$. The Porsche 901/915 transmission can be used in a pan based speedster but it probably adds good $2k to price. You can cut the pan and recess the seat area maybe 2" - any lower and watch out for speed bumps and pertruding man hole covers!
I have a template for a two-inch tranny lift bracket, if anyone wants to make one. That's helpful in lowering the CG and rear of the car.
Wolf, that's a whole lot more than I knew about the Type IV. Mine was intended for a 412, according to the list by the numbers. It used to be a 1.7.
