Last night I spoke with John Collins; his 911-4 cylinder engined 356 is featured in the current (August) issue of "Excellence" magazine.
John convinced me of the qualitiy of the engine case, crankshaft, and other kit parts provided for this hybrid and shared his experiences with different incarnations of his engine and its performance. This is a car his wife can (and does) drive to the grocery store but he can race competitively with.
The basic "kit" is $7,500 and requires a lot of new (new = expensive) or good used parts to build, some of which must be modified. By the time you're through a $20,000 engine would not be unusual.
This is a 200 to 220 BHP (depends on build) engine that will rev to 8,000 RPM and probably go 250,000 miles before needing a teardown/rebuild.
I have been bitten by the bug to build one of these for my IM Speedster since it already has a custom close ratio 901 5-speed with torque-biased limited slip differential. So if you see me sitting on a street corner selling pencils from a tin cup please buy some.
