I just put a set of Continental PremiumContacts (175/65-15) on my swing axle VS and thought I'd post first impressions.
These are good tires.
Maybe not what you'd want for setting lap times at the 'ring or for keeping up with @Terry Nuckels on a twisty road, but good.
Possibly very good - it's still a little early to tell.
They're easy to source and summer tires (which are getting harder to find in the sizes most of us run). Tire Rack carries them and my local shop had no trouble finding them, either - within 24 hours.
I like the 175 width because it allows easy fender clearance - more than the two-newspaper-sheet spacing I see on many Speedsters. I like the '65' aspect ratio, because the VW suspension relies on a substantial sidewall for much of its compliance (I would say its 'cushioning', but that word never seems right for a Speedster).
I have quite a bit of experience with these tires on my MINI Cooper, (they're OEM) and they make that car handle like a slot car.
They don't make the Speedster handle like a MINI, but they're a big improvement over the hard-as-a-rock Dunlops I've been running since my Speedster was new. To me, what a tire does at the ragged edge counts the most, and that's where the Conti's really help. First, the outright grip is better than before, but the breakaway seems a lot less 'squirrelly', too. Still not as smoove or predictable as a good IRS car, but way better than it was. And the ride is pretty good, too.
Oh BTW, the official name is PremiumContact 2 (an upgrade from 1.0, I guess). Pricing is not too bad - about $100 at Tire Rack. But wear rating is a scant 280, so I won't be getting 50,000 miles out of these puppies.
You pay for your thrills.
