Most rim repair shops worth their salt can do this type of widening as AL said.
I even had thought of having my fuchs increased to 8 inch to add more meat in the back as they are 7's right now and 6's in the front.

I haven't found anyone in Phoenix to do this.
Paul....You can put too much tire width on the front too. Too much will reduce the pounds per square inch contact pressure of the footprint thus reduce braking effectiveness. I once doubled the footprint and ended up with less braking and more lockup. Since I had money invested in this little project I played with adding more weight which helped. Then I deflated the tires and got nearly the same result as adding weight. So I re-installed the old tires and rims, added a little weight, and deflated the tires. This helped quite a bit and nearly got me where I wanted to be. Sold the new tires and rims and save some $ I guess this is "Horseback Engineering" with WAG'S (wild ass guesses) but it worked..............Bruce
Great information Bruce. What pressure do you recommend for the front with 165s.
I've run both 135's and 145's on the front of a bug and they are evil little pieces of rubber! With front discs, type 1 drums and 185/70's on 6" rims on the back the discs would almost lock up just thinking about having to stop! Went to a baja bug with substantially bigger tires/wheels on the back and with stock drums all the way around and braking was still unbalanced, although not as bad as the Cal Look car. The answer in both instances was type 3 rear brakes. And yeah, I think adding a little weight in the front of a Speedster would do some good as well. Al

That would look bitchin', Ray!
Edit- I've had a pair of Fuchs 15x 6's widened 1" to the insides (a la '67 911R) for the back. 195's fit...
PS- @PaulEllis- start with 20 lbs. in the front tires. And ask the local hotrod/high performance guys about who does wheel widening. They'll know.
Tire choices for our small cars is getting harder and harder to keep within a reasonable budget-OUCH!
I have two new 135 15's on 4 bolt VW narrow chrome rims , can be used Beetle fronts or for a Speedster spare tire........for cheap~
@Alan Merklin, I thought what you have is 145 15. What is for cheap?
new 135 x 15 I have two on chrome 4 bolt rims $50 each
Paul....I had Pirelli P-4's, 185-65-R15 on all four. I ended up with 18psi in front and 22 on the rear. This seemed to work the best overall. The fronts would still lock up first but the rears would follow shortly after. Just knowing that helped with my control of the car in that I knew what to expect.......Bruce
Thanks Bruce.
Stan: was the east coast distributor in northern NJ? Not too far from me if so.
I NEED THESE SPORTRACS!
The one thing I noticed down south on the Blue Ridge, is that Stan's IM equipped with Vred Sportracs, simply did not squeal or slide. Meanwhile Carlos and I were forced to overdrive the crap out of our tires to keep pace. Really looking forward to having another go with proper rubber.
