undercoating

Does anyone have information, experience, in removing undercoating from pan down to bare metal? (VS constructed in '01) I've got a creepy feeling that it's possibly hiding rust and rot that has to be repaired. Thanks, Carl

it sucks. i did it on my old ghia vert

heat gun, good resperator & ventilation, paint scaper, then wire wheel.

It's a job not for the faint-hearted. You can make it slightly more appealing by going to your local steam cleaner first (if they still have such businesses where you live). He'll remove all the mud, grease, and some of the undercoating. You'll feel positively virtuous when you're done.

Even a good gas operated pressure washer will remove the loose undercoating and caked on grease exposing rust beneath it.

Happy scraping the job really sucks or a more prompt method, light it on fire :~) BTW : Do Not walk into your carpeted living room after doing this task.

Diesel fuel. plastic tarp , spray bottle, scraper and neoprene gloves. Place the chassis in th platic tarp ,Wet the undercoating with the diesel fuel via spray bottle. Let it soak awhile then use the scraper to remove . It works great , You will get dirty and most likely throw th cloths away that you wore.
Sandblasting is not good at all . The abrasive rebounds off the coating. Waterblasting will remove it though it take for ever to do it. Torch will do it along with a scraper .Downside is a fire that you can't put out .
Have fun and get dirty .

If its the rubbery/tar based undercoating those 2 speed hot air guns (powerful "hair dryer" looking from Sears or Harbor Freight) guns will soften it up where it can be scraped or wire brushed off. I'd get most off before going the solvent root. (Have couple fire extinguishers handy).
