Attention Alan!! oh, or anyone interested, ha ha I just heard of an unfinished CMC speedster project if anyone's interested, it's in the hershey PA area which is close to carlisle so if anyones interested I could forward the seller's info so maybe it could be coordinated to see it the weekend of the show, anyway I dind't see it but a friend did and he says it's red and runs but still needs some wiring done and the seat upholstered and I think side curtains and maybe more, he mentioned that he's trying to get in the neighborhood of $5K.

hey Corey, You definitely pointed me in the right direction and got me thinking a few months ago when we spoke about building what you want if you can't find it. I'm not 100% certain of what exactly all I'm going to do but at least I got a start, bought an older one owner 79 speedster and have been slowly accumulating parts for either it or another one in the future, got a conv D windshield frame ,windshield, authentic conv D top frame and might have a lone on both complete doors with glass and working regulators. A friend is looking into the possiblity of mating a vanagon 2.1 liter water boxer engine to a golf auto trans but has to see if the mounting bolt pattern will work. I know it'll take some time for the work but at least I'll have what I want and will have it a whole lot sooner than waiting for S_ _ , if you know what I mean, don't want to bring that topic up again, ha ha !!!
Jane, you have a lot to look forward to as you make that car your own.
I feel, personally, like that was the most frustrating -- and at the same time the most cathartic -- period of my life. It's up to you how much time and attention you want to pay it, or whether you want to hire it done, but every personal touch will result in years of satisfaction.
My advice would be to collect up as much stuff as you need to to build the car, and begin to clean and polish, prep and paint those pieces as you continue looking.
It took me a couple years to find all the right bits:

Hey Clint,

Well unfortunately I couldn't come up with the money when it was finished, I know that sounds horrible but I tried my best ,its when the economy crashed and to make a long story short I used to use a floorplan company to finance my cars here at my car lot and because of the poor economy and people that couldn't pay off the cars the finance company cut people off who hadn't been with them for more than 5 yearskinda like how credit card companies cut people credit even with good payment history, but anyway I was forced into using my own capital therefore needing what was ear marked for the roadster to stay in business and to top it off I had a 57 190sl that was in the process of getting ready to sell and combinded with being forced to pay every single car off on the floorplan I didn't even have enough to get the sl ready to sell, sorry so long but I don't know any other way to get it across, the bottom line I forfeited the roadster unfortunately. When I made the initial deposit everything was great, been in business for over 15 years at that point but who would of known the bottom was to drop, anyway I would love nothing more than to have a roadster like I had planned for so really anything I build will really be not my first choice but I'll make the best of it, might take a little time cause I'm going to do everything myself well through people I know rather than order a turn key but I'm not complaining just be glad to have a speedie back!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the way you look at it Corey and I've been doing just that, got everything I need for a roadster conversion, 356 conv d top frame, 2 nice "d" doors with nice glass and window regulators, D windshield frame and glass even going to order the special order square weave just to have it on hand and enough leather hides for the seats and door panels with pocket and buckle, just need a donor and am thinking about the IM I just bought its a one owner 1979 just not sure I want to alter it really. Paul C. helped me with the company that sells a great A/C kit for speedsters and I have the best Vw mechanic whose been working with me for over 10 years so its just a matter of putting it all together now and well finding the car too ha ha but all of it is fun huh, the thrill of the hunt!!!!!
