Hi, I am just putting my toy away for the winter and I want to fog the motor . My question is :which two pistons are  at top dead center at the same time, and which two are at the  bottom  of thier stroke ? Also when rotating the crank 180* do they shift from tdc to bdc and visa versa? Thanks ,tom

Well I do not know what "fog the motor" means, however when I'm going to store a motor / car for a long time more then a few months. I will generally put it on stands so the tires are not touching the ground. Pinch off the fuel line and run the carbs empty. Add some fuel stabilizer to the gas tank. Pull both sets of rocker arms off so that I don't waist a valve spring by keeping it compressed. Then pull all four spark plugs and drop a little marvel mystery oil in the cylinder and screw the plugs back in. Cover the air cleaners with plastic bags and I'm done....

sorry gordo but fogging is not like squirting mistry oil into the cylinders, not at all,the squirted oil pretty much gets one place, the lower portion of the cylinder. using a foging oil will coat the parts from the crabs to the exhaust.valves, seats, rings, cylinders etc. you can get it at most marinas, west marine and other marine retailers.west also has online services and free ship on a lot of stuff.(my wife has been a west marine manager for many years,....hmm me thinks she's been working there since 2000 if my memory serves me right.)and I did spend a lot of years in the performance marine industery also....

you fog each cylinder while the engine is running at about 1800 rpm(through the carb throats.)shut down when can is empty or let idle when neeering emptyness& let the rest of the fogging oil kill the engine.(dont forget to switch off the key. but first!!! put fuel conditioner storage/stabill in the tank of fuel& run a few miles(I like about 10 miles) to get it to the carbs, just adding to the tank wont do squat.then fogaway!!!

"Anyone got evidence of the benefits of MMO ? Just wondering and not trying to start trouble."

No trouble at all….

I’ve used it years ago to free up rusted, seized pistons by pouring one quarter cup into each sparkplug hole, waiting a day or two, and then turning the engine over with a wrench.  On an old 1937 1 ton truck, I used the engine crank, just standing on the crank arm and bouncing a bit til it broke loose.

I use it around the shop, along with PB Blaster, to spray onto rusted bolts and nuts, let them sit a while and then try to loosen them – sometimes it works, sometimes I have to use a lot of heat.  I’ve found that a MUCH better penetrating oil is a 50/50 mix of transmission fluid and acetone.  That works far better on rusted parts.

I have never used Marvel into a carb throat, although I’ve seen others do it but I’ve never been convinced of the benefits there.  Instead, I either squirt a stream or shoot an aerosol blast into the plug hole and replace the plug.  I do that when the engine is stopped and don’t run it after application.  That’s worked on my boat engines (both gas and diesel) for years but I’ve never done that to my Speedster as I tend to drive a few times during the winter.

I used to fog my 2 stroke outboard motors by shooting the carbs till the motor died and then squirt some into each cylinder and turn it a few times by hand.  I also used MMO in the gas tanks before I ever heard of ethanol treatment.

My newer E-Tec 2 stroke fogs itself with a throttle setting trick.

I also used MMO in my SU side draft carbs in my Healy , Volvo and MG s, to keep the slides from sticking.
