Depends on what you plan to do with the car, front discs and rear drums are fine for a medium size motor, the Beetle was heavier and only had all drum brakes, speedsters are in the 1,450 to 1,750 lb range.
All wheel discs are only necessary for larger HP motors and perhaps a race application and will need a residual valve installed as well as a larger fluid capacity master cylinder. There will be discussion to the contrary but this is how I see it.
ok just to start. i am having a monster motor built. ? would like to lower the to start and now i need some stopping power now. already have ghia disc brakes up front. ? again is is that enough. i would like to change the rear as well. converting from swing to irs and have drum in the back. the car is vs built in 2002. ive been looking into 11inch cb brakes or cross drilled 4 pis. cal.. but i do i really need. this is going to built like no other. will have pics up shortly. also having a gene berg 5 speed. racing tranny installed as we speak.
I too would like to upgrade my brakes but am unser as to the route to take. The IM has the Ghia discs up front and the rear drums. I'll be putting in a 2.4L 911 S which, reportedly, should generate somewhere in the neighbourhood of 180-190 HP.

Currently in there is a 2.4L 911 T which I think is about 135 HP. The car stops fine as far as I'm concerned. Its very easy to lock up the wheels...I don't know that I'd need anything more than what it has for the motor that is in there now. I just drive the car on the street.

But I wouldn't mind upgrading the fronts to something more eye appealing like vented rotors or something like that. Is there anything out there that would be bolt on?
