Uprating standard brakes

Hi to all my American friends, well i seem to know you from the amount of time i spend on this site. I wonder if anyone can help me, i run a Chesil Speedster here in England which is based on a VW pan and has standard 1303 rear drums and a standard disc conversion on the front. What i would like to know is there anything i can do to improve the braking?. If anyone can help it would be a great help. thanks everybody.---Tim Saunders

IMHO- If you have a pretty standard 1600cc engine - stock brakes should be sufficient. Weakness is you need more weight over front wheels which do 80% of braking --- bigger fuel tank and battery would help.

Or a few bricks in the nose. The forward weight shift during braking helps, but with a rearward bias as bad as these cars have, a little more weight up there can only help.

Assuming other parts of brake system are in good shape a cheap fix is to replace the rubber brake hoses with stainless steel mesh covered ones - they don't balloon like old rubber ones so give a firmer pedal. Get good quality ones though.
