USA Made Right hand drive ?

Don't ask me why not sure I can put it into words but I have always wanted a right hand drive 356. Does anyone know a builder that will make one? Any legal or insurance problems with getting one titled and tagged and insured?

VS makes them. I considered it as I love RHD cars and have owned many. The wife talked me out of it. It will also make resale more difficult. There are no legal issues or restrictions on where you sit when driving the car. You could sit in the middle if you really wanted.

Right hand drive cars are pretty cool. As long as you remember the shift pattern going with the left hand. It feels different.

We were going to build the spyder right hand drive, Tom - Thunder Ranch told us the novelty would wear off, especially driving it in traffic.

Never seen one personally, but IM sends cars to the UK and Japan, so maybe they do one as well.

I have driven a couple RHD cars here and in the UK, and although it doesn't take long to get the hang of it, I worry about my instinctive reactions on the gears etc if I needed to hit one fast. Plus, switching from RHD to LHD all the time would be a PITA. After driving my Superformance (signal switch on left side of column), I used to turn on the wipers in my daily driver every time wanted to turn...looked like a fool... well, more of a fool.

Driving an RHD is an experience! My wife and I spent two weeks in Great Britain many years back and I rented a Vauxhall to tour the countryside. Weird part isn't "driving on the wrong side", its not having any feel for where the left side of the car is. I hadn't driven three blocks before I clipped off a parked cars side mirror (sorry, didn't stop:) and then almost every left turn I ran over the curb. Gotta get used to the car being 3-4 feet wider to the left than your reflexes say it is.

Wait till you do a round-about you have no idea as to where the hell to go.....you slow down a bit then and pause to plan your approach while the horns carring on behind you.

Yes, we make RHD for some of our overseas dealers. Keep about 6 RHD kits in stock at all times. Currently have 3 speedsters and 3 spyders in RHD.

I have considered making one for myself several times. Just always liked driving RHD stuff.... In fact, I bought a RHD Toyota Sera out of Canada over the weekend.

I hit a goat/sheep in Ireland because I could not judge the distance of the left fender. It look a lot longer than a week to get used to it. I was there for three and when I returned my Renault, the left side of the car suffered very deep thatch scratches from front to end. Thank goodness for insurance.

My brother-in-law and I vintage race a right hand drive (RHD) Morris Mini-Cooper, are rebuilding a RHD Lotus Super 7 that we have auto-crossed for years and he drives a RHD Morgan as a daily driver. After a day with RHD it comes natural (could be easier for us as we both are left handed).

We have alot of fun in the Morgan driving down beach road with him driving in the right seat with me sitting on the left. From behind no one knows its a RHD and really gets shook-up when all the sudden I stand up from the left side with both hands raised in the air.

All the IMs that Henry sends to Japan are LHD. THe Japanese apparently want the authenticity of having LHD Speedster and Convertible D replicas.

I actually have a RHD IM being built right now. Henry had apparently not made a RHD for some years. He shipped the chassis and body to Speedon in the Netherlands who are IM's European agent and they are in the process of finishing it off.

They are installing a Jake Raby 2615cc Type 4 which should make life interesting. I'll post some photos on the forum when its finished.

James: I'm planning to purchase a RHDrive IM (one day!), but can confirm that JPS and Vintage have both offered to build one as well. Note that Henry at IM has also offered to convert a used LH drive IM to RH drive, so that might be an option for you also.

Hmmm...

My problem is exactly the opposite of yours. I live in Australia where our cars are RHD. Unfortunately, most of the speedster replicas that are available are LHD. I'm currently in the process of trying to convince myself that driving a LHD will not be as bad as I think.

Bill, I have owned a RHD speedester for 6 years now and the novelty has not worn off. It does take a while to get used to shifting with my left hand and making left turns in an uncontrolled intersection is always dicey.

I travel a lot for business, in US and Europe. LHD holds no fears, though I still head for the wrong door.....
