I would very much like to purchase a vintage speedster replica.  I see the prices all over the place.  There is one at Beverly Hills Motors for 27,995 with 7000 miles built in 2007.  A new one is 30k. Do they really have such little depreciation.  I just want to pay a fair price.  Any help would be appreciated.

Frank,

Depreciation depends on many factors; manufacturer, options, care/maintenance and length of ownership being four important ones.  If you are worried about depreciation, then a well bought late model used VS would probably serve you well.  The people that get slammed are the ones that buy from a big ticket manufacturer, load it up with personalized options, don't look after it very well, and then decide to dump it within a year or two of the initial purchase.  However, the car you are looking at is priced a little steep.  I would say a fair private party price for that car would be somewhere in the $20-23K range.  Dealers do mark them up and wait for that impulse buyer to come along. I have a similarly equipped 2006 VS that I purchased new for less than $24K otd in 2006 and have twice turned down $20K offers recently.  Take care of them and drive them several years and you will not get hurt when it comes time to sell.  Be a little patient, as it seems a week doesn't go by where a late model, well kept VS doesn't show up for sale on this site.

Frank, i'm also in the hunt for one.  Values of new kit cars have gone up more than $10,000 since 2004, the problem is they do not hold their value if you were to sell.  there is a big gap.   I use to have one, i had a very original looking with the Pre A wheel, colum, bracket, original stick and knobs and other things that were original including a reproduction motor that fooled all the original enthusiasts and i lost money on my car about $6,000.  Buying a kit car is not an investment but a joy and happy time.  IF you  buy a car for the enjoyment and not worrying so much about the investment, i say go for it.  When i bought my car in 2004, i never thought i would sell it but i had to at the time.  Now i wish i never did, kicking myself in the butt for that.  Hard to sleep at night man. i have a real porsche 911 and its a fun car, but the speedster is the most fun i have ever had.  YOu just have accept that is a re-creation, not a original and you be just fine.

You might try this and advertise to buy a car for cash in the various magazines and over the internet....

It is a kinda distressed sale search...there may very well be a person or persons out there that want or have to sell just the car you want and they are not aware of your interest.

Craig's List is free and so are several others and the cost of ads is also nominal.

I have done it with some success. The internet has changed everything to a buyers market.

Frank, these yahoo's will give you the straight poop every time! The question is where do you wanna go to get one... if you do your research, then you'll be qualified to buy one from a private party... as a result, you'll save a ton of cash, if not... then you're paying for the dealer experience and I really did not care for that crap... I don't know anyone who does... I actually went to Vintage and spoke with Kirk when i was first looking too... I immediately garnered great respect for him... because he actually told me to buy used and drive the tub for a couple of years, if you like it, then sell it (used tubs retain their value better than new ones) and have Kirk build your new one with all the bells and whistles you want... Personally I NEVER meant an owner of a business that told me to do that... I was blown away, but I listened and pulled the trigger a few months later on a used tub out of L.A. I will not tell you what I paid here but I will tell you that if I ever sell it I am certain to make a profit, then have Kirk build my dream Speedie!

The good news is that this is YOUR call... look around and when you finally pull the trigger we'll get you a cool nick-name and formally welcome you to the madness here too!

Speedster "D" Just saying!
