Ive been reading up on it and going to give it a shot. However, should i do this while changing my oil? Will i just dump oil all over if i pull the valve covers?

Only a little may drip out. Most will have drained back into the sump through the push rod tubes.
You will need to determine if you have aluminum or steel push rods to know the appropriate clearance.

And the engine needs to be stone cold.
Touch a magnet to a push rod.
If it doesn't stick, they're aluminum and you set them to .004 intake and .006 exhaust.
If it sticks, they're chromoly and you adjust them to .000 - .001 for everything.
Do a search on here and I'm sure you'll find a few posts on how to adjust valves of both types.
Remember to put on NEW valve cover gaskets. I don't put RTV on them, others do. I only put a wet film of automotive grease on them, stick them to the cover and assemble the cover to the head.
Oh, and a rag on the floor beneath the covers will suffice to catch the few drops of oil that drip out.
