I recently installed an A-1 brand, 1 5/8" merged exhaust system.
This is a hide-away style, with the muffler close to the valve cover on right side.
After ~500 miles, the valve cover gasket on the right side started to leak.
I'm wondering if the added heat from the muffler had something to do with this.
I'm thinking about trying a high temperature gasket made of GSILICONE.
Has anyone tried these?

There are aftermarket heat shields like mentioned above used for 911 Porsches where the exhaust system passes close to the cam towers and valve covers. How close is the muffler to your valve cover? Two or more inches for an air gap between the muffler and valve cover shouldn't cause any problems, especially if the muffler is more or less parallel to the cover as opposed to angling underneath it.
I bought a pair of Empi valve covers, with bails. What a piece of crap. After clipping and unclipping a few times the bails stretched out of shape. With the bails on I can easily pull my valve covers away from the heads!!! I ended up modifying my Pauter rockers so I could go back to the stock valve covers.
