David is 100% accurate. My sampling is limited, but the really cool looking aluminim cast/milled covers that screw on w/ a shoulder bolt are crap, if you ask me. I hear the newly made in China or elsewhere covers that mimic the originals are also crap. Original VW steel w/ steel bails are the ones. Work like thay are supposed to, and also could be powder coated, I suppose, so you could dress them up.
I have some real nice cast aluminum covers that replicate the type 547 engine. The gasket lip has a groove to eliminate leaks and the kit comes with coupling nuts, sealing washers, crush washers, acorn nuts, instructions and a set of cork gaskets. Go here for prices and a link to a photo:
