Will, the aluminum case VW's were spec'd for .006 however most people find that they are very noisy. I still like to set the exhaust at .006 because the valves get hotter but the intake valves can handle .004 with no problems

Paul, I'd suggest you pull the distributor out, remove the points or point eliminator, remove the base plate and check the mechanism under that plate. They collect a bunch of grease, gunk etc. Wash it out with brake clean then lightly lubricate the advance mechanism

If you grab hold of the rotor with the distributor still mounted and turn the rotor, you'll see how the mechanical advance works. This needs to be super clean for it to work correctly. Then again, the 019 may be a strange creature that won't allow you to lower the idle timing and still keep 28 degrees BTDC at 3,000 RPM's
I just received the following form Glenn Ring. His name is all over The Samba when discussing German Mechanical advance Distributors for these engines.

"The 019 has 17 degrees advance so setting total at 30 will give you 13 initial. You could back it down to 28 degrees which will give you 11 initial"

I guess I am not too far out. Sure seems to run much smoother when I am around 8 initial. May not be a bad idea to clean it up anyway. Ill take a look and see how dirty it is under the plate.

Thanks Larry.
So, here is a question. Would setting the timing too advance cause the bogging symptom I had when approaching 80 mph? This happens when the timing is set at 28 btdc.

when i back the timing down (around 24 btdc total advance) the valves are much quieter, the engine just sounds happy and it is pretty damn smooth, right through 80 mph.

The engine is telling me something different than I keep reading over and over. I pulled the base plate out of the distributor, looks very clean. re-lubed the advance mechanism with the Mallory grease. I replaced the points and re-set them.

My gut feeling is to run the car where the engine sounds the best, regardless of what i am reading. the same gut feeling has gotten me into trouble in the past...
Just got back from a good shakedown cruise. 2,150 miles to Florida and back. I was still having tuning issues. While in Atlanta I Dropped in an 019 Distributor (i packed a timing light) my brother had pulled from the 912 motor he is running in his 356. My car has never pulled through the power band so cleanly. Drove 6 hours through rain... very little water in the cabin. Only slight drips from the corners of the windscreen posts. I placed two sponges on the floor boards to absorb the water. Worked great.

So now what... Guess I just sit back and enjoy, that is once my legs quit tingling. 12 hours straight in a speedster is work for sure.
