VDO Spedometer

I have a VDO Speedometer, that reads only in kilometers. I reset the trip counter last week and it quit working, just the kilometer counters, both the trip and regular one. I would like to replace it with a VDO speedometer that reads in MPH. Where is a good place to buy one?

Henry at intermeccanica has the MPH version, but it is about 250 dollars. I'm not sure but I think the KPH version is always cheaper. It is also important for you to know NEVER reset the trip odometer unless the car is not moving. You can get away with it sometimes, but maybe the first time or the 10th time it will break it. The unit is not designed for moving resets.

Check with CB Performance; they have the full 356 VDO set (they don't separate the pieces) for $379.95 the last time I looked.

John at JPS Motorsports has a source that can repair your speedo, and I think even change the face to MPH. You should be able to get that done for less than $250. Look under "Makers" for contact info. Good Luck.

Check with palo alto speedometer www.paspeedo.com . They rebuild, repair, recalibrate etc.

Yep! That's just what I did. I was only going about 10MPH or 16KPH.

VDO makes numberous models of gauges both for OEM and aftermarket use. Assume you want it to match the other gauges already in your dash so you need to find out the model and see if it is still available. Cockpit is the current most popular model. If you buy new one - check the diameter too because there are several different sizes. Some of the new ones do not use a speedo drive cable but require costly speed sensors. You may find it is better to just have yours repaired -- they can replace the face or guts too.

Even after I broke mine (by resetting it whilst moving) I have to ask;
Who the hell designed a trip odometer that can only be reset while sitting still?

Someone, I think Eddie, said they had plastic gears. I bet that is the problem. When I was pre running the SOT yesterday I was using my Ford Escape and it has an electronic digital apparatus, pretty cool. It even beeps when it has been reset. I guess we always have to remember we are dealing with cave man technology with our tubs!
