You can find repros for around $10 - $20
Are you looking for something for your Speedster? Then check here:

http://www.nlaparts.com/store/reutter-chassis-plate-p-1113.html

The body numbers are stamped in, just use a set of machinist's number dies. The other info is found on a separate plate which it fitted on the shelf on the passenger's side of the gas tank. If you wanna go all out, I can source those plates for you as well.
Nolan,

Are you trying to mimic the 356 hinge cover and body number plate or just putting something cool on your Speedster?

If the former, I can trace my hinge cover(s) and take a pic of the body number plate for style and placement if you like. You could easily cut a pair of hings covers from sheet aluminum and affix the correct plate for the year and body manufacturer that your replica was modeled after.

If you're goin' for an original effect, the numbers have to be stamped and the rivets need to be the correct size and style in order to carry the day. If you're going for looks, then definitely go with the most stylish plate, D'leteren or Drauz, and have the numbers done by a jeweler (or engraver) using a fine chisel cut. VERY stylish ! ! !

Lemme know,

TC

Yeah, that's why I was asking. I don't think that Karmann made the early Speedster bodies either, but then, none of body plates were ever engraved.

Just wondering if it's all for a nice look or tryin' to imitate originality. Those Drauz body number plate are just SO much cooler looking than the Reutter or Karmann ones, don't you think?
Nolan,

Here's the hinge cover, ident. plates, and a valid 356 body number all ready to roll for you:

Buy it up, apply for a title, slap it on, and start looking skywards for the shit hammer to fall . . . the Porsche Boys are gonna HATE YOU!!

[Oh, I ran the VIN through The Registry and it's not on file with them. Chances are very good/excellent that the car is long gone and only random parts (including this little treasure) remain.]
I ordered couple plates from Klasse356 - had hard time finding paint color code to put on the Kunstharzlack plate. Found them at:

http://www.356-911.com/modelinfo/porsche356colour.htm

Most of the factory plates seem to have a letter in front like L - I thought that was perhaps an interior color code but L is not a valid one. Anyone know or is it just the 4 digit color code that goes on the plate. Mine is Schwartz/Black = 6013 and with rot/red interior = A.

Anyone fab'd up the more authenic look aluminum plate or have a tracing?
Thanks for all the sites and info, just got my Reutter's Karosserie Plate and Kunsthorzlock plate from Stoddards, they came with mini rivets. Now to get down to my local trophy shop to get them engraved. Also got the gold Meistershaften badge for the glove box. I'm not sure which body works plate to get for a Cabriolet, the Glaser, Karmann, or Drauz. Anyone know which is the correct one?

Wolfgang,

I just checked my photos on site. For some reason they are a mess and unreadable Many of the same ones showing both exterior and interior colors! Looks like I'll have to send you a jpg. via email. Note that black is black, but red is Turkish red, Polyantha red and then Ruby red. Only the year number changed. Turkish Red 5402, Polyantha red was 5602 and Ruby red was 5702,
