Has anyone ever tried to replace them? I would love to do the conversion to the correct layout, but I think I've settled on an "outlaw racer on a shoestring budget" look. Plus I have an actual shoestring budget, so that part is authentic. I have these gauges, and they work, and it's really just the text on the faces that bugs me (well, the wacky layout is another story).

So I don't mean sending them off to Deiter's House of Expensive for restoration, I mean cracking them open and printing something up on the office LaserJet. Maybe at the least making faux-German text labels to cover the offending logos?

The other option is a homemade machined AL dash panel with any-old cheap clocks popped in, but that will still cost more than $0 so it's more like a last resort.

This is perhaps a bit off the topic but check out this guy's resto....

About 2 years ago or so he did his guages and there were some interesting notes. I believe he had them silk screened or something like that. I can't see why you couldn't have a decent graphic arts studio or shop do that for you...

I had the Vintage gauges - unlike the VDO gauges the chrome-like bezel was securly crimped onto the plastic housing. It did not appear to be removeable without destroying it. I've taken the bezel off old VDO gauges (to replace the easily scratched plasic lenses with glass ones) and although tricky since they are tightly fitted - it can be done with only minor scaring (which is not visible when reinstalled).
Stephen, I tried it. In fact I still have all the bits and pieces in a box. My wife is an art director
(read:advertising person who is photoshop literate). I was going to enlist her assistance when the time came. The rings are crimped pretty tightly around the lip but taken slowly I think
it would be "reinstallable" (I know). Plans changed when the car got painted before gauges were changed and the time for some dash modification was in order. I have my old gauges at work, car at home. If I can remember I'll try and reassemble one and let you know. I think
it'll work out.
Stephan, why not opt for these:

They ought to go cheap enough not to break your budget, and the bezels will clean up with some light sanding and a quick spray of Krylon Semi flat black. They're the signature Outlaw gauge, genuine Porsche, and will most likely fit right into the exiting holes in your dash.

I can walk you through the wiring if you need the help.

Maybe?
It really is cool, makes me proud to be a member.

Back when I used a sportbike as my only transportation, a member of the bike forum drove from Oceanside to Irvine to pick up my bike after I crashed it; and dropped it off at my home in Temecula, all while I was at work. I had never even met the guy.

That forum and this one are the only websites I have ever donated to.

Bruce, thanks! I'll fire up Photoshop.
