Just want to report how pleased I am with the Vintage Speed shifter in my IM. It has been surprising how much it improves the driving experience. I highly recommend.

I agree !! Huge improvement over a stock shifter. I love mine in my Vintage Speedster. When I had mine built I had Greg move my shifter 3 1/2 inches back from stock, to allow for a more comfortable shifting position. I don't have to reach forward to reach the shifter. It's right where it feels good with my back still in the seat.

The majority of race cars are like that. I read once that it was because most race tracks ran clockwise hence the driver ingress/egress was away from pit lane traffic. AFAIK, most single-seaters have the shifter on the right, too. 
Only RHD road cars have the shifter in the middle. (Same as LHD cars)
