I just received my 1-5/8" Custom "superflow" exhaust from Vintage Speed. It is a real nice looking unit. It was custom made to be used with heat exchangers. Very cool people to deal with. I ordered it on the 17 of March. Was told 3-4 weeks to build and 4-8 days to ship. Last week I was told it would be shipped on the 13th. Today is April 12th. It arrived in a highly modified DeLorean. Needless to say im very Impressed with shipping time, packaging was done very well. All in all these guys are running there business right. Cant wait to see what else they come up with. I cant seam to get parts form California this quick.

Ive attached some images. I am going to put the sound meter in my car tonight and take some readings with the current exhaust, then take some when I have the VS installed. I need to have flanges welded to the unit in order to mate up with the heater box.

Ive got $520 into the exhaust. Another $266 into heater boxes and levers. The exhaust was custom built (apparently not custom enough) to use 1-5/8" tubing with the heater box set up. Vintage speed does not tpically offer this. Feel free to make an offer.

I could have the exhaust manifolds fabricated to drop the exhaust enough to clear the rear valence (valance?). Not going to happen anytime soon though.

Jim, good point about extending the tips. I was thinking along the lines of trying to avoid black residue and heat from destroying the paint on my bumper.

I agree, cut it. From the first picture it looks like you'll only have to remove a little fiberglass, which you could do with a Dremel or something. To protect the paint on you bumper you could use some of the clear film tape that's available from Griot's. I have a roll of it that's 2" wide and that I used at the top of my doors to protect the paint from rubbing by the windows. I also put a piece under the ignition switch to prevent the key from scratching the dash. This way, when it becomes blackened, just peal it off and add some new stuff.
Cutting the apron = 20 mins. Cutting the pipes boring new holes, filling old holes erwelding pipes back on etc.... $$$$ time time ime. Cut it and be done with it.
Paul, it's a beautiful exhaust, very period correct, and obviously very well made. I guess you could say the same thing about your car but it's just two little 1/4 circle grinds that can be filled in with minimal work and repainted in a weekend when and if needed.
I had the same issue with a similar exhaust a few years ago and wasn't gonna cut my car; I got my CB engine and the exhaust and as soon as we put it in and saw the exhasut wasn't gonna line up properly I walked right ove to the drill and hole saw,
When we talked with Ming at the Sacramento Bugorama last September, we talked with him about using his exhaust system with our replicas. He said he could send the system without placing the tips. Then you could cut and place to fit.
But, I do agree with everyone else: cut the glass. That's what I did to fit my system.

Paul - just for the sake of visual reference, here are a couple of pics of my A-1 Sidewinder exhaust. It appears that my single center-exit exhaust tip (which I shortened by 2") is about the same length as your custom exhaust. No issues with exhaust burn or residue on the rear valence or bumper...FWIW.

That exhaust is TOO COOL to not make it work on your car!!

The guys at vintage speed are really good. For being in Taiwan, they are on top of it. I sent MT Lee images of the problem... he told me not to do anything before I hear back from them. They are thinking of a solution. Most vendors would say "Well, thats the exhaust you purchased... sorry". This is a group that takes pride in there work, cant say the same for industry giants like Bugpack or Empi.

Ill wait to hear form vintage speed before I get the sawzall out...

This is whats happenig. I am mailing my exhaust to a vendor in California. If youd like it, Ill give you there information. MT Lee is sending me a 1:1 full scale drawing that I will plot and make a cardboard stencil out of. I am going to mount the manifolds and modify the cardboard stencil to fit my car exactly. I will draft this up in AutoCAD and send the elevation with dimensions back to him to fabricate a completely custom exhaust for me.

Pretty damn cool.
