When I was a kid, there was this really old guy (but then, EVERYONE'S old when you're a kid) who used to bring his 356A coupe for service into the shop I hung out in. He never let us change the oil, only the filter and add a quart or so of straight 30 wt., non-detergent. He did that every 3000 miles, religiously, as well as check the valves (they were seldom out of adjustment, too).

When he died (I think he was 84 or so) the car went to his kid, who soon did an oil change and put detergent oil into it. Soon after that, it started to smoke heavily so he bought it in to see what was wrong. The detergents in the oil had loosened the deposits inside the engine and turned the oil to sludge, quickly ruining the bearings, rings and cylinders (and probably a lot more). He had over 90,000 miles on the odometer....and it wasn't a Mexi-crate engine, either!!

David,

Cease Poling! Your reply was a good one. :)

All:

Ok, ok, ok guys. I had a 1776 and put 25,000+ in 3 years on it. I love 1776s. I drove my VS with a 1776 to places you all haven't seen in your daily drivers. I wouldn't give a nickel for a cast cam gear though!

I was just havin' fun with this amazing poll to seek security in a purchase already made.

Sheeeez, can't a guy pull a Vince now and then? (That's with full respect for Vince.)

I gotta pole, er poll. I need to feel good about my paint. How many of you bought a Ruby Red Speedster between October 2004 and April 2005 and are still happy with that choice? Ok, Black between July 2001 and August 2001?

Hi all,

I haven't posted here ever, as I'm a new "Vintage Speedster" owner. Now, on the one hand that may seem like good news and all that, but I'm not so sure. I bought from Kirk because of all the good reviews and comments posted here by those of you who bought from him, so I think it only fair that I let people know what my experience was like.

Not sure what happened in my case really, but overall, I have to say that I
Knowing that there are dozens of satisfied VS customers here on the SOC I am wary that all of the stated problems are on single car, the Kirk you discribe does not fit the professional business person that we know ....not by a long shot.
Kirk does go out of his way.....way out of his way to satisfy his customer base, this is documented here in this forum time after time with constant kudo's from the VS owners here.
Regretfully Kirk does not post here. With any situation there is always two sides to be voiced.
As stated herein, I'll have to hold my conclusions as the number of very positive responses that will surely follow will draw there own conclustions.
Sold my VS with only 1000 miles, meticulously maintained (verified by SOC members). John Valerio purchased the car last year and about 20 minutes from his home the engine expires. To make a long story short, Kirk replaced the motor and exhaust with his new 1915 house motor...

Here's the highly disturbing e-mail I just received yesterday:

" Hi Rick,

Its been awhile since we spoke. I hope all is well for you. I think about calling or writting you a lot, but time is always short. I thought I'd give you an update on the Speedster. The tow truck just picked it up to take it down to Vintage Speedsters for the fourth time in the past 5 months. Its always been the engine. You did good getting rid of it when you did. I will never own one of these again. Just in towing alone I have spent over $1,000! To Vintage its been $3859.00 This time I really let Kirk hear my mind. So hopefully they get it right and don't charge me. The past times should have been taken care under warranty. I really like the car, its just ashame that Kirk Duncan and Company can't get it right. I am afraid to drive it anywhere away from home. Yesterday I was 30 miles when I broke down!

Other than that the car has been great. Its been everything you said it was. I am putting it up for sale when I get it back. Take care.

John"

John is a mild mannered, soft spoken, very nice person. I was happy at the time to know that my pampered VS was going to such a good home. It is not my intention to bash Kirk and I haven't since I've been here (2001)but c'mon, isn't it time to exercise some responsibility here?
Granted, the car is no longer mine but I went through that build with Kirk as proudly as Jim went through his with Henry. I feel it was a part of me.I am just sad that John had to experience such undue grief with the house 1776 and now the 1915, as I not only sold my baby but gained a friendship.

Sincerely,

Rick
