From John Leader: "Had I known the secret to a fast sale (and a fascinating hijacked thread) was NOT to list the price... "

Now me. I've had two offers on my car, both offering a lower price, $15 and $16,000.

I respect negotiations and compromise a lot, however, neither person looked before offering. In one case distance is a factor.

Took a nice run yesterday on well maintained farm roads. Had a hamburger at a road house, took a biker dude for a ride, came home, cleaned and waxed the speedster. The machine looks soooooo good.

New price $20,000

BTW the biker loved the sounds...

Michael, first let me commend you on having, not only the balls to list a price, but to then within a week, actually raise it...
There are certinally no "airs" about you.....
However...Michael, you ignorant slut,(SNL) do you not realize that a new Vintage is only a mere few grand more than your new price..
Take the 16 Large, lick your wounds (or anything else) and start your new build..
I think he's soin the ol' "list it high cuz they're gonna lo-ball ya" thing.

(that said, I still think you should post "If you'd like to discuss this fine spec-a-mine of an automobile please call to make an appointment. One of our brokers will return your call and your appointment will be scheduled based on your checking account balance and your resume of previously owned imitations of highly sought after exotic cars.")
Dave-

I'd buy the $15K car, and see if you like it. If it's a good fit, sell it on ebay, and order what you really want, once you KNOW what you really want. Until you've owned one for a while, you'll never know what that is.

If something besides a Speedster will scratch your itch, I'd point you in another direction. A replica falls pretty far down on the "value-o-meter". Great water-cooled cars are available everywhere for way less than $15K. They are Boxsters and Miatas. I point everybody who wants full-on accoutrements in an open car in that direction.

Used entry-level used speedsters go for more than that. There's no free lunch- inexpensive, modern low-maintenance drive-train, Speedster: pick any two.
Some how the term "entry level speedster" rubs me the wrong way. It could be perceived as a mild insult to the owners of the less expensive Speedsters. It sort of implies that we all aspire to own the most expensive Speedster produced and I don't think that is the case; I know I don't. It sounds too much like the Carrera 4 owner looking down his nose at the Boxster owner.

Maybe "less expensive used Speedster" would be a better phrase.

In this case less expensive used Speedster isn't appropriate!

Bob's car has that big ol' growler of an engine, low mileage and has been fussed with in a loving way.

This is a duress sale and an opportunity for a first timer to get a nice machine that is a keeper. IMHO

Hmmm... 15k for a machine that would cost twice that new. For all intents this one is new and California registered. A no sweat car. Doesn't even have dust on the chassis.

Zoom, zoom...
Troy-

FWIW, I had an "entry level speedster" once. It was a great way to get to know what I really wanted. That's what I'm advocating- buying a less expensive car, driving it for a while, and finding out what you'd really like in a "dream car".

That's what makes a car "entry level". Buying one that doesn't meet 100% of your (perceived) dreams, so you can find out of it's a good fit or not before custom ordering one and letting it sit in your garage. "Entry level" has nothing to do with price.
Ehhh, Stan you meant anything other than an IM is an entry level car, we know.

I'm kidding, I'm kidding, just yanking your chain Stan. ;)

I think it depends on budget, location (weather where you live), garage space, etc.... if I had a garage, lived in So Cal, and made what I make now I'd probably own a second hand Vintage, JPS, Beck without a top :)
"entry-level"...?

I find that a bit obnoxious, for: a) not everyone has the same desires and wishes, and what for one can be just the 'beginning', for others it may be just what fits the bill; b) when you do a custom car, you tend to make it to your specs, and hence...

If you want to recommend someone to buy a cheaper, second-hand car to see how it works, how you feel, etc, then just say "first car", or something like that, because, personally, I find the term offensive and derrogative - would anyone want their dream car to be labeled as "entry level"?

Returning to topic - it looks like a great car at a great price!!
Geez! Will you guys loosen the sphincters some? There's nothing wrong with "entry level" here.
Those that have been around here for awhile know it's used for years and years. Ya buy what you can afford. Yes, it's wise to buy an "entry level" car to see if it fits your expectations and likes. If not, you're not out 20k or more for overbuying.
It's the same with production cars. Start out with a Chevy (Vintage) which is a nice car for the money. Then move up to a Buick (Beck w/ tube frame), then on to Cadillac (IM) if you REALLY are into it.
But then again, like the "Great Horned One" noted here years ago, "Anyone that drops 25 grand or more for one of these plastic toys should have his pee pee whacked"

Sorry Bill, but it's a derogatory phase and it's perceived as an insult by some of us. I'm simply and politely pointing that out. With that knowledge, continuing to use that phrase is inconsiderate and not what this forum is all about.
Again, please list the names of the people on this list who have "entry level speedsters" and maybe we can get Theron to create a forum just for them or maybe at Carlisle they can all be parked in a seperate area.

OK I'll start, Troy.
Hi, I'm Bill and I have an entry level Speedster. It's all I could afford. It is what it is.
Ya see, I'm a po' guy and I'm not the least bit insecure, nor do I give a $hit what anyone with a more expensive car thinks of it. I have all the fun with the group that anyone has. I surely don't feel looked down upon the least bit and never ever felt that way. Would I like to have a Cadillac IM? Sure, you bet. But it's not in the cards for me right now.
You have two VERY nice cars and EVERYONE I'm sure agrees. Both are much nicer than mine. Enjoy them!
See, here's me in my "lowly" CMC leading a loooong line of IM's Beck's SAS's JPS's Vintage's and the like...Go figure, and I still feel the love!

Rock on, "Wild Bill". You've got a killer car.

"Killer" used as an adjective should in no way be interpreted as an opinion for or against vehicular murder, mayhem, or manslaughter, nor is it meant in any ways as slight to any vehicle who's owner may (or may not) have been convicted of vehicular manslaughter. "Rock on" in no way is an endorsement of granite over marble, limestone, or any other substrate, or building material (for that matter). "Wild Bill" is in no way a slight of more tame Bills, or even slightly shy Williams. This site is a big tent, and all manner of felonious vehicles, building or paving materials, and folks of any name, creed, or outgoing (or not) disposition are welcome- as long as we all watch our step. Loose lips sink ships (not that there is anything wrong with pursed lips, or submarines).
