Yeah they are awesome. When I was putting FERN together I bought windshield, mirrors, carpet kit, tonneau and more from them. They were very helpful and quick to get the parts out. The also responded very well to emails. I know, I know, doesn't everybody? The answer is unfortunately NOPE.

They are great..... cheers to Vintage.

There has been more than one occassion that I have placed a $3k order with Vintage Speedsters. My hobby of building speedsters wouldn't be possible without their quality products and what is just as important to me, their prompt and professional ...customer service!

"Cathy" is a valuable asset to Vintage Speedsters she is always friendly, knows the VS products in and out and follows through on any special requests
Oh and Kirk and Mary are tops too!

Well here is one for you.
I went to Kirks two days ago and what did I see? MR356! I don't know what the hell it was doing there but I think Vince M is going to have some things done to his car before the show at Knott's.

Now back to why I went to Kirks in the first place. I wanted to pick up a few new do-dads for my ride, additionally I needed to ask Kirk about the 1915 T1 he has been puting in the cars as of late. After looking at a finished motor I asked Kirk to make one for me. I was shocked when he said he would have it ready before Knott's.

He has 30 cars on order but he never forgets his customers.

I always feel like I am number 1 with Kirk and the guys at Vintage!

Thanks once again Kirk
Well Beth many will say it just depends on where you go and who is the one doing the job.
But I will tell you this, to use your motor and build it up is cheeper then getting a turn key.
Plan about $1600 for the build up and around $3800 for a turn key.
But shop around prices vary everyware you go. Furthermore so do the quality of part you put in it.

Beth ,
I can only guess as to what is in your 1776 motor.
I've had the opportunity to drive replica's with various smaller" cc" VW based engines some run as a decent driver and others are romping animals!
There is such a wide range of performance depending on what is inside of the actual engine.
Items such as bigger valve quality ported heads, upgrading ignition , lightened flyheel and decent exhaust will boost the overall HP while retaining your 1776 engine.
Hey Beth!

Tweaking your engine (figuratively speaking) depends on your driving habits. My car is a daily driver as well as a weekend cruiser, so, my 1776 with a few minor modifications (carbs with proper jetting, a properly curved distributot, etc) makes for a responsive yet reliable and inexpensive motor to maintain indefinitely. However, if you're looking to blow the doors off the various Ferraris, Maseratis, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis or Mercedes on PCH between Laguna Beach and Corona Del Mar, then beware the "One-thing-leads-to-another" Syndrome that may manifest when you go to a bigger motor!
Twin plug heads are available (they're used in experimental aircraft VW engines). Bosch 009 distributors are also available converted for dual ignition (I have one). You might have to have a custom exhaust fabricated that will allow access to the lower spark plugs.

Finally, total ignition advance should be retarded about 6 to 8 degrees to avoid detonation (probably about 26 deg total), but you should be able to safely run a 10.5 to 1 compression on 91 octane unleaded premium.
Picked up MR356 from Vintage this morning, compared to most of the members of this great site, my car is real average, but nobody has more fun than I do when I get behind the wheel.....
So although it may not stand out in a sea of other speedsters, I am basically ready for Knotts.....I saw A356TUB up on the rack, being
prepared for Knotts also....David, I can't wait for summer.....
We will rock.....
I have to say it is comforting having Vintage Speedsters within half an hour drive from my house, and although he probably never comes on this site, I need to thank Kirk for everything he has done keeping me on the road and looking cool......
Any of you that have my post about my "phantom horn" will know what I have been working through. I sent Kirk an e-mail yesterday describing the problem and his immediate response was "bring it by before Knotts and we will take care of it in a few minutes" This is a clear sign of someone that takes super care of his customers. I'm the third owner of this car and he still wants happy drivers.

Wonderful

Hi all,

I haven't posted here ever, as I'm a new "Vintage Speedster" owner. Now, on the one hand that may seem like good news and all that, but I'm not so sure. I bought from Kirk because of all the good reviews and comments posted here by those of you who bought from him, so I think it only fair that I let people know what my experience was like.

Not sure what happened in my case really, but overall, I have to say that I
Knowing that there are dozens of satisfied VS customers here on the SOC I am wary that all of the stated problems are on single car, the Kirk you discribe does not fit the professional business person that we know ....not by a long shot.
Kirk does go out of his way.....way out of his way to satisfy his customer base, this is documented here in this forum time after time with constant kudo's from the VS owners here.
Regretfully Kirk does not post here. With any situation there is always two sides to be voiced.
As stated herein, I'll have to hold my conclusions as the number of very positive responses that will surely follow will draw there own conclustions.
No need to be "wary", I assure you. Perhaps I'm more meticulous, I don't know. But I certainly have no vested interest in trash-talking Kirk or his business. I'm just doing what I think should be done to share my perspective on this experience with others who may be trying to decide who to buy from.

I flew to LA when Kirk told me the car was finished, on the edge of my seat the whole flight. My enthusiasm was dampened when I got there and noticied the problems. Kirk assured me would be taken care of before he shipped me the car. I got it yesterday and nearly nothing was remedied.

To be sure, this is one man's opinion. There are numerous posts on this forum and all are universally positive. This is why I bought from Kirk in the first place. I have no idea why there are no other unsatisfied customers to have posted their thoughts here. All I'm trying to do is make people aware that they should be very specific and look things over extremely carefully if they do go ahead and purchase from Kirk.

For me though, I would not give him my business again.
NK,

IMHO the purpose of a board, like this, is to share opinions.

I had two dumb s__t problems with my new in March VS. Just lack of attention to details. Like you I bought my car on the recommendiation of many on this board. Fixed the problems in 10 minutes myself. And have several hundred miles of VERY happy motoring.

Fix what's wrong and go for a drive. My new Cadillac had more problems and this car brings a SMILE to my face.

Hello all,

I was at Vintage yesterday to pick up some coco mats for Knott's. Saw Kirk there and he was as always very professional and talked about some Southern California runs for the summer. Also, saw Beth there, she was getting some items replaced for Knott's also. It was nice meeting her. Kirk has always been great!!!!!!! NK if you can make it to Knott's you can see some of Kirks fine cars.

Actually, NK, yours is the only post we've seen on here so specifically pointing out so many flaws.

Of course, ALL of the current manufacturers are producing product with minor flaws; a few leaks, some chrome hazing due to thin plating, trim adhesion letting go somewhere, things like that, and, again, this is from ALL of the builders. All the customers we've seen posting have fixed those problems themselves or had them fixed locally, usually with the builder picking up the tab for the fixes, and that was that. Interestingly, several very new VS owners have posted just in the past few weeks, and all of them have complemented the paint and finish. Maybe the answer to your concerns is to go there (where-ever your builder is) for an on-site inspection in mid-build (as Jim Ward and several others have done this Spring for their cars from IM) and then do the final inspection/acceptance when it's finished before shipment or pickup, getting things you don't like fixed as the build progresses. That should alleviate problems although, admittedly, it's too late for you, but if I were plunking down $25K+ for somethng, no matter what it is, I would make sure it's right before acceptance/delivery.

It's true that Kirk never posts on this forum, but neither do JPS or IM (Carey Hines posts very infrequently, representing Beck). There's nothing wrong with that - they all choose not to and that's fine with us. They all have good reputations from their customers, and are friends with many on here who are NOT their customers.

Anyway, I think we all hope you get your issues solved, and hope to see you and your car at either Knott's or Carlisle, as you've never stated where you're from.

Kirk has been great to me. I had my car towed over there for storage & a little work (I bought the car just outside LA). He fixed a lot of things on the car, and for a great price. He even let me take his truck to the shopping center so I could entertain myself while I was waiting! He gave me his cell phone # and he doesn't mind if I call him if I have a problem. The car is now back home in NY, and running & looking phenominal. Thanks Kirk!
NK,
I feel your pain...No one should put out 25 large and not be satisfied.....
Judging by this forum it appears his prices are by far the cheapest and his integrity is unquestionable, but sometimes things go wrong,
Apparently it all happened to your car.....Its to late for suggestions in your case, but to all the new buyers, don't take posession of your car from any of the builders until you are happy...
I am one of the biggest "Vintage" supporters, but he pumps out a lot of cars, apparently most going over seas, write things down and make sure you double check everything being done....I've been to his shop many times, he's got a lot of things going on at one time. You can not expect him to remember everything...either that or go to Intermeccanica and spend almost double.......
NK,

You have my condolences. If I were in your shoes, I would probably feel the same.

My car too is being built at Vintage Speedster. The shell is on the pan and wiring is about to go in. Living 20-30 minutes away, I have the luxury of visiting as often as I like. Kirk invites me every time to
