Been talking with VS out of Arizona. Would like some honest feedback pro/con about anyone’s experience having a Speedster built by them. Also got a quote from JPS for a Coupe.
thanks

Please do a search herein on both of your Vendors. May I suggest Carey at Special Edition, Bremen, Indiana and Greg at Vintage Motorcar Hawaiian Gardens CA. both produce excellent quality and customer support.
Thanks. I was looking for search link and must have over looked it.
@Dennis Connaughton Top of the page to the left of your name and avatar. You can do a simple search or a more advanced search. I have no personal experience with JPS or Vintage Speedsters, Arizona. I do have personal experience and knowledge of and with Carey at Special Edition and Greg at Vintage Motorcars. (Blue text are links to their websites) I can attest to the fact that they are both honest, reliable, and true to their craft.
Vintage Speedsters, Arizona was bought and moved from Hawaiian Gardens to Arizona a few years ago. It quickly went under and was bought by the current owner. He doesn't participate on this forum, to my knowledge, and I can only think of one person who has bought a car from him and that was @Speedster Dreams who has been happy thus far.
Use the search function as shown above and learn all you can. I do know if you want a brand new coupe the wait may be a while.
Dennis, as I think you know, I am the East Coast Dealer for Vintage Motorcars of CA and happy to continue conversation on a new build if/when you are ready to pull the trigger. As others mentioned, Vintage Motorcars of CA and Beck both have stellar reputations. Be cautious on JPS builds that are being done in Brazil.

You forgot about Danny from Nipomo and his nightmare.
I've personally driven two of them and both had major problems.
My big issue with the Arizona company is that they advertise that they have built over 3,300 Speedsters. The company "Vintage Speedsters" did build that many, but the employees who built them were all let go when the company was moved. People ordering cars from them base their decision on that deceptive advertising.
Dennis, I ordered my Vintage Motorcars speedster through @RoyP. The process was very smooth. Roy has been the most responsive and helpful dealer I’ve ever worked with. I have also spoke with Greg who is building my car at VM - he was very helpful and great to work with too. I have total faith I’m going to get a great car.

@Troy Sloan I didn’t mention Danny because he bought his Speedster from the now defunct Arizona Vintage Speedster company. The new owner shouldn’t have to take the blame for the way the company was handled before he bought it.
From what I've heard, it's unclear if he is actually the new owner or just running the show for Justin. @Robert M

Just going with what Patric has said publicly. “Patric Fransko discussed chassis and engine options available by Vintage Speedsters owner Matt Teerink. We talk about all the Porsche 356 Tribute options available by Vintage Speedsters as well as what we are choosing to …”
So until it’s been proven otherwise I’ll go with what’s been said and that it’s under new ownership but prospective buyers should do their own research.
You may be right, like I said it's unclear. Are you OK with the advertising claim of having built 3,300+ too?

Not at all and I’ve raised that concern before. I find it very misleading. VS Arizona had nothing to do with VS when it was in Hawaiian Gardens. As such they have had nothing to do with the building of any of the 3,000+ Speedsters.
I've been around the speedster community since starting a mailing list in 1998, then this site. Carey at Special Edition has an excellent reputation and I have known Greg at Vintage Motorcars for 20+ years he builds solid products.

Dennis, curious if you must purchase something new or if you’d be open to purchasing something used?
The Hines’ and Greg and Henry will build you an amazing speedster. That’s a given. But it may not be what you want. There are plenty of 1,000mi or less speedsters out there. And there’s usually a number of reasons for this. One reason? People tend to fall in love with the idea of a speedster. They wait the many months for delivery. Get their speedster then realize it’s not for them. They are unique cars.
I don’t know if you’ve owned a speedster before. And if you have, then by all means, feel free to pass on this advice. I just don’t want anyone to pluck down hard earned money for a romantic idea that never truly aligns with their expectations.
I always try to steer newbies into the used market first. Sometimes Greg, Special Edition and IM have used speedsters (or coupes) for sale. There are even respected members on this site (Troy, Theron, Alan to mention a few) that have sorted speedsters available. Perhaps this may be an Avenue to explore?
Buying used was my advice for 15 years. Given the market the last year, I'm not so sure any more. Used stuff is often just about as expensive as new.

Seems rule of thumb is about $40k or so new and a very nice used around $30k, There is a plus to this as Speedsters tend to go up in value to the tune of 6% annually ~
I looked for used ones for about a year. Nice used speedsters that were close to what I was looking for were always in the same price range as new. Due to this, I decided to go new to get exactly what I wanted without compromise.
Twin City
kind of where i am at., been looking for a year. I know i am being picky but if i do see a used one with colors, engine, AC i will pull the trigger. I saw a Coupe on Cloud9 that i should have pulled the trigger on!
Can i ask who is building a car for you?
dennis
@Dennis Connaughton yes, Greg Leach at Vintage Motorcars. I ordered through Roy at Cloud 9 Classics for a shorter build time and better options.
Now is a great time to also warn unsuspecting buyers of all of the scams that are out there on Speedsters. Given their popularity these overseas scammers have decided to steal images and descriptions from dealer websites and BAT and put together listings. Very common that they have a phone number listed which you can never reach anyone but sometimes someone with a foreign accent will call back hours later. Or, if you communicate via email you will get a long winded email telling you how they are representing the car for a seller and that the car is in a facility and that you can use an escrow service to pay for it and when it arrives you have time to inspect it and if you do not like it they will refund your money
Just a warning to the unsuspecting that this is 100% a scam. Many times the deal seems too good to be true from the beginning but sometimes they price them so that you start to think it could be legit....trust me, it's not!!!!
The Beck car Dennis mentioned is one example and hopefully Dennis will take my advice and steer clear unless losing $30K+ is something that sounds like a good time.
Trovit is commonly used for this purpose!!
Stay safe out there!!!!
@Dennis Connaughton posted:Thank you Roy! I had sent you a private email. It just seemed too good to be true for a Beck. I asked the guy to fly out to see car but he said due to COVID that we’re not providing that option which made me wonder. I have plenty of time to wait. Hopefully you get one in at Cloud9 I want.
@Dennis Connaughton If you have any questions about the legitimacy of any car feel free to post the link and your questions here. You'd be surprised at how many of the cars for sale we recognize and know who owns them or previously owned them. And several of us are pretty good sleuths and can spot fake ads in a heartbeat and are happy to help. I've spotted dozens of fakes and immediately report them to the prospective buyer and the listing website.
We've even had fakes get posted here for sale by people creating fake profiles and then listing a car for sale. On occasion we've been known to string along fake sellers just for fun.
I give thumbs up to Troy and/or Greg. I started looking for a Speedster two years ago. This forum was a great help. Twenty-two months ago I bought a Vintage Speedster (one of Kirk's older builds from the late 90's) from Greg (Vintage Motorcars). You are getting sage advice here. Hope you find what you want. I searched for two months and found one with the help of some members on this forum. I've met John (JPS) and toured his shop since they are a ten minute drive from the coast here in S. Cal. I've met one person who bought a coupe from John and he drove the heck out of it for at least a week here in S. Cal during the shake out process. That shake our run was documented here on this forum. He is happy and the coupe is nice. I know a VW shop a few minutes from JPS and they can look at your motor (assuming John is going to install an air-cooled power plant) and they know a few things about building VW drag racing engines too. Just don't expect them to drive it around for a few weeks, but I would
Hope you get what you are looking for!
