David and Brian, I'm the lad from Sacramento.
I was recounting what I went through with a new VS two years ago. There were issues with the engine, transaxle, and numerous other less serious things throughout the car. We did a quick acceptance drive in LA and then returned the car to the shop to be shipped home to us.
I made two main mistakes. I didn't know VW's at all, and didn't know what to expect of them, and I only drove the car around the block. If you don't know VW's, I'd suggest having an experienced VW mechanic with you and driving the car for at least an hour - including some serious time on the freeway. VS is in a congested neighborhood where it's hard to do much more than slow, stop and go driving.
Kirk is basically a fair guy who will do what he can to make things right for you. But it's a lot easier for both him and you if the fixing is done at his shop. For remote buyers, he will negotiate with you to pay for having work done at your local shop, but that does complicate things by involving a third party.
Also, remember that it costs VS a lot less to fix things in their own shop, so they'd much prefer to handle anything major that way, especially something that requires dropping the engine. And too, finding a local shop that knows air-cooled VW's well is hard enough. Finding one that's familiar with Speedster replicas is near impossible.
Brian, if you'd like to discuss this more, please send me a private message here.
