Vintage 550 Spyder
Body# 5502206K
Body manufactured: 9/2002
Purchased in 2011 from the original owner. Car was a stalled father/son project. Body in primer, suspension installed, some wiring, engine never run or installed. Engine was received in the original shipping crate.
Completed & on the road: 2015. About 1,000 miles on it
Engine:
- Raby Type IV 2316 “C” version Annihilator with updated DTM.
- Replaced valve springs (from Raby) per Jake’s recommendation because the engine sat unfired for a few years
- Estimated hp (per Raby) 185
- New it was $8K. According to Jake it would be closer to 20K if he were to build this same configuration today.
- Had the car professionally rewired. All fuses are up front and easily accessible
- Vintage exhaust
- Remote oil cooler in rear with fan
- Remote oil cooler up front
- Remote brake and clutch reservoirs in front (CNC)
- Hydraulic clutch
- Cable shifter
- Disk brakes (front), drum (rear) Drum skins all around
- Self cancelling turn signals
- Horn
- Low/high beam switch
- Push button starter
- Coil over rear suspension
- Stock VW components up front
- Fibersteel: removable helmet fairing, rear clam struts, rear clam “latches”, front “latches”, rear view mirrors
- Leather clam straps
- Fender darts are a wrap, not painted on
- Pegasus & castrol are removable
- No top, side curtains or tonneau cover
Negatives:
- Rear clam latches will rattle loose. I’ve replace with the updated parts from Vintage but still haven’t found an adjustment that works well enough to keep the clam closed and still be able to open it without any problems. Leather straps keep it close while driving.
- Firewall was cutout to fit in the engine. It’s been glassed back in but needs to be sanded and cleaned up. It’s been that way for a while and is structurally sound – just not pretty if the carpet is removed.
- Needs to be driven!
