After over a year of semi-lurking here, I'm in the process of finally ordering a new Vintage Speedster.

I've got most of the options figured out and am going with Kirk's standard build 1915 cc, which he now builds with Webers and a 'W100' (Engle, I guess?) cam. I'm wondering about also getting the A1 exhaust.

How much real world power or torque does the exhaust add? Does it lower the ground clearance much? Does it make getting to the valves any harder? Any other problems with it?

Note that this is NOT A1's 'sidewinder', but something else they build that exits in the center. Has anyone replaced a stock VW exhaust with this one so that they could compare the real world difference? It's being quoted as a $500 upgrade. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have an A1 but it is the sidewinder.  I have the magma flow muffler and another muffler (Sebring race bullet) which I run more than the other and it is verY loud. I have to remove either of them to do a valve adjustment even though the race bullet is much much smaller.  Takes me about 15 minutes to take off as one of the bolts is a real pain in the ass to get to.  I have the classic gulley on the end of my driveway but have never had it bottom out.  I pull in at an angle but still isn't a problem head on.  I have no clue if it adds HP or torque but certainly sounds the part. i have the 1915 cc motor and had them put in a 110 engle cam which gives it a little more grunt.  I had vintage build this one from scratch and also had a used vintage.  If you got the funds get the external filter and oil cooler.  If you wish to discuss what to expect when building with Vintage...let me know...

Todd, thanks for the reply.

The only references I see online to A1 VW exhausts are all for the Sidewinder, but Kirk said what he installs is NOT the Sidewinder so I'm wondering just which A1 model it is. Does anyone have any pictures of the A1 that VS installs?

I can see how you'd have to remove the muffler to get to the passenger side valves with a Sidewinder.

I am concerned about ground clearance as our driveway has a hump we can't avoid.
