I was in L.A. for a doctor's appointment today, and decided to look for Vintage. As someone else posted recently, I found Kirk to be very friendly and extremely helpful, and he gave me the tour of the place, and he showed me several of the cars he's working on now.

Some interesting info: they build about 5 cars a week; last year they only built 4 flared fender 356s (he kind of agreed with me that that was 4 too many :)); he is in the process of filling an order for 16 bound for Switzerland- he said that since the dollar is so weak, he is making a lot for foriegn buyers; the new cars had a rubber gasket around the headlight trim, and he gave me some of the rubber to put on my headlights, no charge; also, he'll replace my rear wire harness for $150 out the door, which I think is a fantastic price. I think I'll take mine (94 VS) down to him in a week or so to have that done, and kind of go through it stem to stern to freshen it up a bit. I thought mine was in pretty good shape for being 10 years old, but the new ones are SWEEEEET! He made a pretty good pitch to sell mine and get a new one... hmm... :) It's my understanding that they get quite a few calls from people looking for used Speedsters.

If there's anything else anyone wants to know, ask and I'll try to remember...

Bob,
Think California. There were tons of 'em sold there. Two of America's prominent Porsche replica builders are there, along with many after market VW suppliers. This is a ticking clock, however. As the scarcity of usable pans increases, along with the resultant price increases, the bubble will eventually have to burst. I wonder if Kirk has a tube frame car on the drawing board. This will be interesting to watch.
John
Theron,
I agree with you that there is a large supply of pans, both on or near the left coast and in Mexico. However, Speedster builders are not the only ones drawing from the well. Also, if in fact builders have to start buying pans from south of the border, do you think that this will put pressures on the currently attractive pricing? Is it just a matter of the gross numbers available or do you have to factor in the cost and difficulty of getting the raw materials to the builders's sites?
