Check your fan shroud; basically its mounting bolts at the ends and the strap that attaches the alternator to the stand. Start the car; put your hand on top of the shroud and wiggle it around while the engine's idling to see if you can reproduce or fix the noise. Should be a fairly simple fix.
I had to add shims on one side of the fan shroud, where the fan plate bolts to the shroud. Had a zero clearance situation between fan blade and shroud. Shims cured the fit. Now I get a whispy oil film out of that small crack. Next time engine is down (not soon I hope), I'll clearance the shroud just a bit, and get rid of the shims. Oh yes, my shroud is glass.
UPDATE: one of three problems. Two tabs on the mufflers, one weld came off, and the other had a screw fall off. AND...the pin that held the rear lid up (you know, the one on that lil'brass chain) broke off and fell down into the compartment. Still working on getting that one out! I wondered where the heck that thing went!

Tabs fixed and no more major issues, although I know I hear that damn pin in there! ;)

Good detective work! Chalk the pin up to "someday," as in "Someday, I'll know it fell into the road, 'cuz I won't hear it anymore!"
What'll really get'cha are the ones you hear after a big 'ole pothole, especially if they go away after a block or two and come back for no apparent reason months later!
