Does anybody know anything about this one? Any history? I'm thinking about going to check it out.

Beth,
I don't know where you are located, but my general rule is,
before I hand over 10 large, I'd like to see and feel what I'm getting
for my money....I'm in Redondo, not far from Marina Del Rey, and I
would be happy to check it out for you, if you wanted, but I wouldn't be able to do that before the time is up on the bidding.....
However if you talk to the guy and he doesn't get his bid, I could
look at it over the weekend for you....let me know.......

I am in Laguna Beach but work in Cerritos. I just e-mailed the guy and set it up so I can see it today after work. I have been trying to learn everything I can about these cars over the past two weeks and will definitely get one, I just don't know which one yet. I have a whole list of questions. Is it IRS or swing axel (probably the latter since it's a '64 VW); I know it was built by VS but not when, does it have disc brakes, etc. I noticed the droopy top also but assumed that it was just raised for the photo and not properly fastened down. I also thought the hood looked mis-aligned at the front but the guy said all the seams were perfect.
I also looked at one in Laguna Beach (silver) but have not driven it yet until the guy gets back into town. It is very nice also but all the chrome pieces show rust pits (cheap-ass plating that is done nowadays) and will have to be replaced. It is of course by the beach and he only has a carport, no garage (see it at adcache.collectorcartraderonline.com/10/0/2/70589502.htm although that is the stock photo from VS, not the actual. I appreciate the help from you guys....

Beth,
That collectorcartraderonline.com car has a picture I took in San Jose. The photo is stolen off of the Vintage Speedsters site. I would be very cautious. Considering they didn't even take a picture of the car they are selling. They also say that the car is silver, the car in the photo is pewter, a very different color.

Beth if your not familiar with vw engines you should have someone who is test drive any car before you buy it..........take it out and go 75 for about 20 minutes and pay attention to the temperature and how it runs this can give you a better idea of how the engine is and if it may need some upgrading on the cooling

Well I checked out the Red '56 Speedster from Ebay....thumbs down, not what I am looking for at all. It was built in the mid-1990s and has not been taken care of; car dealer bought it from actor Wings Hauser. It had elapsed registration, damaged rims, 4 different tires (Kumho, Michelin, Viza, and a dry-rotted and nearly flat Kelly); engine filthy, hood and engine covers mis-aligned, wrong conv top and/or bows, cock-eyed muffler and bent rear emblems. It showed 23 mi. because the dealer changed out the original gauges (they were "fogged over") so it really had 25K+ mi. Dealer also replaced exterior chrome to make it presentable for digital pictures. I should have known something was up when the reserve was already met at $10K. The only good thing about the trip was seeing the beautiful architecture on some of the homes along Marina Del Rey.
Vince, thanks for offering to check out the car...I'm glad I didn't waste your time. Dan, your car is beautiful and just what I am looking for except I have my heart set on Red first, then maybe Silver or ?. I do like the fact that it is different and retro but I already have a 1970 VW Squareback in the original Diamond Blue, not my favorite but it grew on me. It is converted to run on propane and I drive it to work everyday because I get free fuel where I work (see photos).
Steven, I will take your advice when I drive the Silver one from Laguna Beach tonight to check out the temps, etc.

Hey...if it gets too bad I just crack the vent wings wide open! No, seriously, my VW SqBk runs 10 times better on propane than gasoline (it is dual-fuel), very smooth and consistent on propane with just a tad reduction in power.
Beth,
Can i assume you are a non-smoker..........
