Hey Chuck. Congrats on your new speedster. I would at the very least change the oil (and filter, if it has one) and adjust the valves. Maybe check the points and the color of the plugs, to make sure the carbs are jetted properly.

If you're going to be storing the car for the winter, make sure to put some fuel stabilizer in the tank, since the gas available at the pumps now-a-days doesn't last long enough to make it through the winter.

Chuck; your car is overdue also for a transaxle fluid change (VW recommends doing so at the first 600 miles for a new or rebuilt transaxle). You should also change the engine oil (Kirk recommended doing so at around the 300 mile mark). The odometer in my car also indicates around 1,000 miles and I've already changed the engine oil twice and adjusted valves once). Go to the Library section here and you'll be able to download the Vintage Speedsters Owner's manual which is 9 pages long but gives you the basic maintenance requirements. I also suggest you buy the factory authorized VW Service Manual by Robert Bentley which you can buy at Amazon.com through the links in this website.
Chuck, I have the Bentley manual that Ricardo refers to, but I didn't find it nearly as helpful as the Keeping your VW Alive book by John Muir. I don't know what your skill level is, but John's book is designed for the fledgling shade tree mechanic (like me). It is very detailed, has good illustrations, lots of peripheral information and is a great and fun read. I think that this book is also available through a link on this site, as the Bentley manual is.
