We will be keeping our new Speedster in Aliso Viejo (Irvine area) and/or Oceanside CA. Does anyone have referrals to good mechanics in either or both of these areas?

If you absolutely can't get your car to Larry Jowdy in Ontario (do a Search on this website for Larry Jowdy) I guess this would be the next best (convenient) shop. The shop is called Unique Imports in Mission Viejo (Jeronimo/Alicia). The owner is Chip and has done all the work on my Speedy (what little it's needed). Tell him Jim (the scary Samoaan-looking guy with the silver Speedy) referred you.

Thanks for the referral. Even though our new Thunder Ranch Speedster seems to be solid and is way too much fun to drive, we would like to have someone more reliable than the T/R staff give it a "once over" inspection.
Driving home from the T/R 500-mile service, the hubcaps flew off the car and the steering wheel was completely loose by the time we made the 80-mile drive home. How hard can it be to snap all 3 nubs on DUH hubcaps or make sure DUH steering wheel nut is tight?
Our concern is that, if Tom McBurnie's staff can't figure out how to snap on hubcaps or that having the steering wheel stay connected to the steering column is important, what other mechanical items may be loose or improperly installed.
These problems were about a month ago along with a few other minor items that were not fixed on the 500-mile service. Since then, Thunder Ranch has not replied to our telephone calls, emails, faxes or letters.

#2 Choice = Chip at Unique Imports. Down-to-earth and convenient location to you.
Don't even get me started on why certain manufacturers DICK their paying customers around. To me, not responding to communication attempts and blowing off simple repairs (seemingly routine) speaks volumes about their integrity (or lack of). A man is only as good as his word!!!!!

Just got back from visiting Unique Imports. My impression is that they are a good shop and they told me they have worked on a number of Speedsters. They also have a couple Porsche mechanics on staff that can do the routine maintenance on my Carrera S.
I will be bringing the T/R Speedster in for a "check up" next week.

I know you want to find someone close to your location. However, I can think of no one better to take that car to than Larry Jowdy. Even if you only go the one time he will give you the straight scoop on the car and no one knows more about these cars than him. I took my car up there a week ago for the first maintanence and he did a great job. Plus I was able to watch and learn from him as he did what needed to be done. AND you might talk him out of a couple cold drinks while the work is being done. A great guy who does great work at a more than reasonable price.

Again, thanks for the lead on this shop. Brought the new T/R Speedster in on Monday to have them fix the engine leak. I assumed it was a poorly installed valve cover gasket, but found out that T/R installed the wrong push rod tubes on the original engine build.
Chip at Unique Imports fixed this problem and found that the transmission and oil filter fittings were not tight and also leaking. He showed me the wrong parts and did a good job on the repairs.
The exhaust tips installed by T/R were hanging too low, were not level and had silly looking baffles at the ends. Chip shuttled the car around the corner to Collins Muffler shop. They installed chrome rolled tipped pipes that look very much like an original. They did a perfect job and gave me the exact look I wanted.

Glad to hear your experience with Unique VW was a positive one. Chip is a pretty good guy and down-to-earth shop owner/operator and has always done right by me (don't tell him I said that). He even loaned me his personal car when he had to keep mine overnight. I still give him $hit about driving an orange Corvette (not the car he let me use).
