I spent several years in the Bus world. I restored a 77 Westy. The Splity market is a whole different ball game. It has a lot in common with the 356 world. Depending on what you want a Westy or a 21/23 window are the most desirable. 67 is the best year as it was the first 12 volt and had the first 1500 motor. A top quality driver standard bus will cost you over $40k. I you want the rare sub hatch west or the many windows and sunroof be prepared to head toward $100k. A wreck again depending on rarity could be over $25k. Watch out for fakes, they are out there.

I had a '63 delivery Panel and years later a '72 transporter.  I don't miss the '63.  It was grossly underpowered and squirrely to drive in even low winds.  Forget about taking a corner at any speed above 25 mph - it would only do about 60 down hill with the 40 hp engine.  Not a fun or safe drive.  I rather enjoyed the '72 with the dual OEM Solex carbs on the 1700 cc T4 engine.  It would cruise at 70 easily but you sill had to be cautious in wind. It would hold tons of stuff - I even pulled a 15' sail boat locally with it. I still had a '72 914 at the time and it was a great pair. Took the transported on many skiing trips with a Coleman catalytic heater running in back for heat (with windows cracked a bit).

A late model with a Subby engine would be cool --- an AWD one maybe!
