this will be a total newbie question, but If a VW engine is installed in a spyder ,with the back of the engine facing the front of the car, won’t the car go backwards when you are in a forward gear?

The transaxle R&P gear has to be flipped.
That is a completely reasonable question for someone who is intelligent to enough to figure out that something has to be done to solve the issue. Good question!
When using 6 cylinder Corvair engines in VW based cars mounted to the VW transaxle with an adapter we sometimes built reverse running engines with a special cam shaft or we flipped the ring and pinion of the transaxle. (the Corvair engine's normal rotation is opposite the Type 1 VW engine's rotation.

Thanks all....
Same issue with using the 914's version (mid-engine) 901 5 spd transaxle (911/912) in a Speedster --- 5 speeds in reverse! The 914 version is cheaper used and more readily available. R&P there has to be reversed their too.
